The International Service for Human Rights (ISHR) is an independent, non-profit organisation founded in 1984 that promotes and protects human rights by supporting human rights defenders. Its work includes training, information, strategic and legal advice, advocacy support, and assistance with international and regional human rights mechanisms. The organisation runs a three-pillar strategy: supporting defenders, promoting rights and accountability, and strengthening human rights laws and systems.
ISHR's activities span human rights law and accountability across several fields, including women's rights, LGBTQI+ rights, business and human rights, and land, climate and environmental rights. Its ISHR Academy provides an online platform of information and support for human rights defenders and other users; 16,945 people accessed it in 2024. In 2025, 1,318 defenders received training or advocacy support, and 73% of ISHR's recommendations were taken up by states in the 2023 Universal Periodic Review.
The organisation maintains offices in Geneva and New York and a permanent presence in Abidjan, working globally. It collaborates with the UN, regional bodies, national human rights organisations, businesses and other partners, with a stated commitment to inclusion and to leaving no one behind.
