ITHAKA
ITHAKA is a nonprofit that expands access to knowledge and education through JSTOR, Portico and Ithaka S+R, working across digital libraries, preservation and research.
ITHAKA is a mission-based nonprofit that works to expand access to knowledge and education worldwide. Its stated remit covers making higher education and scholarly information more affordable and effective, improving outcomes for students and researchers, and preserving digital knowledge for future generations. The organisation operates across 180 countries, serving higher education, scholarly publishing, academic libraries, museums and cultural institutions, policy, and education in prisons.
Its technical work spans digital libraries, digital preservation, learning platforms, collections stewardship, research and analytics, and strategic guidance. Three services carry most of this: JSTOR, a research and teaching platform with collections-stewardship tools that provides access to collections held by academic libraries, publishers and museums; Portico, which preserves scholarly and cultural digital materials for future generations; and Ithaka S+R, which conducts research and provides strategic guidance for colleges, universities, libraries, publishers, cultural institutions and policymakers.
Alongside these services, ITHAKA invests in emerging education services, supports higher education in prisons, advances credit mobility, and develops new approaches to research and teaching. Engineering work is therefore oriented toward long-lived scholarly infrastructure: large digital collections, preservation systems expected to endure, and platforms used by institutions across the research and education sector.
