BioRender

BioRender is a web-based platform that helps researchers and life-sciences teams create publication-ready scientific figures, graphs and posters using expert-vetted icons, templates and AI tools.

BioRender is a web-based visual science communication platform that allows researchers, students and life-sciences teams to produce accurate, publication-ready figures without advanced drawing or design skills. The BioRender Platform combines a library of more than 50,000 expert-vetted icons, thousands of templates, figure-building tools, graphing and data analysis functions, collaboration workspaces, and workflows for scientific posters and presentations. It is used by more than 4m scientists worldwide, and figures made with it have appeared in hundreds of thousands of publications.

Alongside the core platform, the company develops Leo by BioRender, an AI agent that plans layouts, builds editable scientific figures, applies BioRender styling and refines individual visual elements. This places the company's engineering work across several domains: AI agents and generative AI, scientific illustration and figure generation, data visualisation and graphing, web-based SaaS delivery, and collaboration software.

BioRender was founded in 2017 in Toronto by Shiz Aoki, Katya Shteyn and Ryan Marien. It operates remotely and serves customers in life sciences, academia and research, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, scientific publishing and education. The company is backed by investors including Y Combinator; the amount and stage of funding are undisclosed. Its stated mission is to accelerate the world's ability to learn, discover and communicate science.
