AILAC is a coalition of seven Latin American and Caribbean countries that coordinates shared positions on climate change in multilateral negotiations.
AILAC - the Independent Association of Latin America and the Caribbean - is a coalition of seven countries that coordinates common interests and positions on climate change in multilateral negotiations. Its members are Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and Peru. The association works across climate change policy, multilateral climate negotiations and sustainable development.
The group was formally constituted in December 2012, having coordinated its negotiating positions for several years beforehand. Its establishment was announced at a UNFCCC Conference of the Parties in Doha, Qatar. The seven members represent a combined presence across Latin America and the Caribbean.
AILAC describes itself as a grouping built on shared interests and similar positions in international climate policy. Its stated aim is to advance balanced and ambitious positions in multilateral negotiations, in line with sustainable development and responsibility to the environment and to future generations. Coordination among members is presented as a response to limited national delegation capacities and the growing complexity of the negotiations.
