Job Summary:

The Lifeguard ensures the safety of all swimmers in and around the pool area, by actively monitoring the pool, enforcing safety rules, and responding quickly and effectively to emergencies. The lifeguard provides first aid or water rescue when necessary and helps maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the safety of all students and patrons utilizing the pool and its surrounding areas.
  • Recognizes and responds quickly and effectively to emergency situations.
  • Inspects the aquatics facility, assists teachers with pool configuration.
  • Administers first aid in the event of injury, rescues swimmers in distress or danger of drowning; administers CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary.
  • Inspects pool facilities, equipment and water to ensure that they are safe and usable.
  • Instructs or assists classes in fundamentals of swimming as needed.
  • Judge and evaluate evolving dynamics of individuals participating in aquatic activities to immediately assess their capabilities and threats to their safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • High School diploma.
  • First Aid and CPR/AED Certification by the American Red Cross.
  • Previous experience as a lifeguard.
  • Thorough knowledge of application or rescue and lifeguard techniques.
  • Ability to observe participant activities adequately, to enforce safety regulations and to apply appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to see and hear within normal parameters with or without correction.
  • Full range of head, neck, and back movement; unrestricted ability to bend knees, raise arms above the head, and to move hands, fingers, and wrists.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds without difficulty.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and/or walk for sustained periods of time.
  • Must successfully pass fingerprinting, background checks, and TB clearance due to working in proximity to children.
