Sofar Ocean

Sofar Ocean operates a global network of marine weather sensors and provides ocean data analytics and voyage optimisation to shipping, science and government customers.

Sofar Ocean, founded in 2016, builds the world's largest privately-owned network of marine weather sensors and turns the resulting measurements into ocean intelligence for maritime industries, scientists and governments. The company's stated premise is that oceans cover 70% of the planet yet remain largely unmonitored; its answer is a sensing infrastructure designed to be affordable and scalable rather than confined to research fleets. The network streams more than 1.5 million real-time observations a day.

Two products carry the business. Spotter buoys are low-cost marine weather sensors that gather and transmit live ocean and weather data, forming a privately-owned observation network. The Wayfinder platform applies that data to voyage optimisation, rerouting ships to save fuel and cut emissions. Technical work spans marine weather sensing, IoT sensor networks, ocean data collection and analytics, real-time environmental monitoring, maritime routing and climate-science data.

Customers and users are spread globally, including commercial shipping fleets and maritime logistics operators, port authorities, climate and ocean science researchers, and government bodies. The company frames its long-term objective as making the ocean as predictable and as transparent as land, and describes its culture as mission-driven, with an emphasis on making ocean data accessible and on lowering the environmental footprint of shipping.
