Sales Engineer – Integrated Security & Access Control

 

Location: Remote Johannesburg (with regional & Africa travel)

 

About the Role

 

We are looking for a Sales Engineer — a hybrid commercial–technical professional.

This role sits at the intersection of engineering, problem-solving, and relationship-building. You will work with clients who operate complex environments where security failures are not an option: corporate campuses, logistics hubs, industrial sites, hospitals, and high-traffic facilities. You will be expected to understand problems, design systems, and convert trust into long-term client relationships.

The Purpose of This Role

The Sales Engineer exists to:

  • Convert qualified opportunities into well-designed, profitable projects
  • Protect margin through disciplined scoping and pricing
  • Introduce maintenance and annuity income as a standard part of every solution

Key Responsibilities 

Client Engagement & Discovery

  • Conduct structured discovery meetings and site walk-throughs
  • Understand human movement, security risks, and operational constraints
  • Identify failure points and long-term risks, not just immediate needs

Solution Design (Pre-Sales Engineering)

  • Design integrated access control and security systems
  • Select appropriate technologies (access control, biometrics, CCTV, speedgates, barriers, etc.)
  • Work from approved product master lists and system architectures

Commercial Conversion

  • Prepare proposals using standard templates and pricing logic
  • Present solutions clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Position maintenance and service contracts as risk management, not upsell

Pipeline & Process Discipline

  • Manage opportunities through defined sales stages
  • Maintain accurate pipeline reporting
  • Collaborate closely with operations to ensure smooth delivery handover

Skills & Experience Required

Essential

  • 5+ years experience in a technical, solutions-based sales environment
  • Strong ability to engage credibly with engineers, contractors, and executives
  • Comfortable reading drawings, specifications, and site plans
  • Commercially astute with an understanding of margin and cost drivers
  • Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel

Advantageous

  • Experience in access control, security systems, CCTV, or building technologies
  • Exposure to African markets or cross-border projects
  • Engineering, technical diploma, or equivalent practical experience

Remuneration & Incentives

  • Market-related base salary (Sales Engineer level)
  • Commission linked to gross margin

A base salary in the region of R500K.
