About the opportunity

The Principal Engineer is our most senior engineering contributor within a domain. You will provide deep technical leadership across multiple teams, shaping our long-term technical vision and guiding the evolution of our systems and platforms. This role combines architectural thinking, hands-on technical expertise, and strategic influence to ensure our systems are secure, scalable, and sustainable.

Acting as a trusted advisor to Engineering Managers, Product Owners, and senior leadership, you will foster a culture of engineering excellence. You'll champion modern practices and mentor engineers across the organisation to lift capability, solve complex problems, and improve delivery performance.

In this role you’ll get to…

  • Drive the technical vision for our engineering platforms with a core mission: creating a frictionless experience for all builders in our organization. Act as the technical linchpin across our engineering platforms, unifying the strategies of our Developer Experience teams to ensure we are building a cohesive and interconnected ecosystem.
  • Lead the design and evolution of our Internal Developer Platform (IDP), enterprise container platform, and core shared services, directly shaping the developer experience for all engineers.
  • Pioneer the application of AI within our own technology landscape, identifying opportunities to improve system observability, automate complex operational tasks, and enhance the developer lifecycle.
  • Partner with our Data and AI portfolio to shape and deliver the enterprise-grade platforms that enable their business-facing AI/MLOps practices, accelerating the path from model development to production.
  • Champion and embed modern Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles across the full operational lifecycle, from integrated environment management and service management frameworks, to the automation of operations scheduling and the definition of SLOs and error budgets.
  • Guide the technical strategy for our Automated Testing Centre of Excellence, partnering with teams to define the frameworks and tooling that ensure fast, reliable feedback loops.
  • Act as a senior mentor and technical coach, building capability through design reviews, deep dives, and knowledge sharing.

What you’ll bring to the role

To be successful in the role you will have:

  • Deep, hands-on expertise with Kubernetes, public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) at enterprise scale.
  • A proven track record designing, building, and operating key components of a modern Internal Developer Platform (e.g., CI/CD systems, service catalogues, automated environments), with a passion for integrating them into a world-class developer experience.
  • A strong command of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), with experience translating traditional IT Operations domains into modern, automated practices, including strong experience integrating with ITSM platforms like ServiceNow.
  • Proven experience designing and embedding automated testing frameworks into CI/CD pipelines to create fast, reliable, and frictionless feedback loops for developers.
  • Experience applying AI/ML concepts to solve complex systems-engineering problems (e.g., in observability, security, or platform automation).
  • Excellent communication and influence skills, with proven experience mentoring senior engineers and driving technical alignment across multiple teams and domains.
  • A strong understanding of the end-to-end MLOps lifecycle, with experience in either practicing it or building the robust, scalable platforms that enable it, is highly desirable.
