POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

- Monitor pool areas continuously to ensure the safety of all swimmers and visitors

- Enforce pool rules and regulations to maintain a safe environment

- Respond promptly and effectively to emergencies, including performing rescues and administering first aid or CPR as needed

- Conduct regular safety checks of pool equipment and surrounding areas

- Maintain cleanliness and organization of pool facilities

- Provide excellent customer service by assisting members and guests with inquiries and ensuring a positive experience

- Keep accurate records of incidents, rescues, and safety checks

- Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.

- Attends all staff meetings and in-service training. 

- Adhere to uniform standards including sun protection.



Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:


- Minimum age of 16. 

- Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen.  

- Current Ellis Lifeguard License.

- Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.-

- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with Ellis and YMCA standards.

 - Prior experience as a lifeguard is preferred but not required; training will be provided if necessary

- Strong swimming skills and physical fitness

- Ability to remain alert and attentive for extended periods

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

- Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations

- Commitment to safety, teamwork, and community service


WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. 
  • Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness. 
  • See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility. 


EFFECT ON END RESULT

This position has a direct impact on the overall effectiveness with which the YMCA accomplishes its goals and objectives to the community. The effectiveness of the Lifeguard will be evaluated annually. General performance will be evaluated as follows: knowledge of job, achievement of planned results, relations with fellow employees, quality of work, attendance record and attitude. Achievement of the specific objectives outlined above will also be assessed. A positive attitude and a high level of enthusiasm should be exhibited while performing duties.

Salary Description
$15.00 per hour
