Introduction

A well-established engineering firm operating in the Telemetry, Automation, and ATG systems sector is seeking a skilled and proactive Field Technician – Electrical & Automation to join its technical team in Kempton Park. The company serves leading clients in the Petroleum, Gas, and Logistics industries, offering high-quality system design, installation, and maintenance services. This role focuses on the electrical installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of automation and control systems on-site. You will work hands-on with electrical panels, instrumentation, and control equipment—supporting efficient system performance across client facilities. Regular site travel, strong problem-solving abilities, and the ability to manage small to medium-sized projects independently are essential. Project management experience or skills will be highly advantageous, especially when coordinating installations or upgrades.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Install, wire, and commission electrical panels, sensors, and field instrumentation as part of automation systems.
  • Diagnose faults and perform on-site troubleshooting on electrical control systems and automation components.
  • Carry out preventive and corrective maintenance to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Calibrate and fine-tune sensors and control devices to meet performance and safety standards.
  • Modify and upgrade existing electrical and control installations as per project requirements.
  • Work with engineers to support system design and custom electrical solutions.
  • Provide technical support and basic operational training to clients.
  • Document all field service activities, including diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance logs.
  • Respond promptly to breakdowns and client service calls, ensuring quality and compliance at all times.
  • Assist with project coordination, including planning, scheduling, and communication with stakeholders.

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • Minimum qualification: Matric or N3 (Electrical / Technical field).
  • Further technical qualifications (e.g., N4/N6 in Electrical Engineering or Industrial Automation) are an advantage.
  • Proven experience as a field technician working with electrical systems and automation.
  • Hands-on knowledge of electrical wiring, panels, fault finding, and installations.
  • Familiarity with PLCs, HMIs, and industrial protocols (e.g., Modbus, Ethernet/IP) is beneficial.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, technical manuals, and diagrams.
  • Skilled in using diagnostic tools, multimeters, and calibration instruments.
  • Strong attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols, especially when working in hazardous environments or on live electrical systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure in field environments.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with clients and team members.
  • Willingness to travel regularly to client sites.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends or standby duties when required.
  • Project management skills or experience coordinating site work will be an advantage.

Package & Remuneration

R12 000 - R20 000 per month (Depending on Expereince)
