Sunlight.io builds a complete hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) stack aimed at simplifying edge computing. Its platform is designed to run demanding workloads - AI, Big Data analytics and rendering among them - across a range of environments, from on-premise data centres and AWS to resource-constrained far-edge devices. The company reports that such workloads run up to three times faster on its stack than under legacy virtualisation solutions.

The engineering scope spans hyper-converged infrastructure, virtualisation, distributed systems and cloud platform development, with particular attention to performance-sensitive and high-performance computing use cases. Alongside the Sunlight HCI Platform, the company offers edge computing-as-a-service, a line of business scaled following a Series A round led by Valedor Partners; further funding rounds have been secured. Sunlight.io was spun out of OnApp, whose technology the company says powers more than one in three public clouds for managed service providers, telcos and large hosting providers worldwide.

Customers and partners span managed service providers, telcos, hosting providers and enterprise IT, with deployments in verticals including oil and gas, retail and manufacturing and robotics. The company operates across North America and Europe, and positions its work around an edge-first view of computing, with an emphasis on reducing operational complexity and cost for customers running distributed infrastructure.
