OpenRouter

OpenRouter runs a unified API giving developers access to 300+ AI models from 60+ providers, with model routing, consolidated billing and reliability features.

OpenRouter, founded in 2023, operates what it describes as the first and largest AI gateway for developers. Through a single unified API, it gives access to more than 300 AI models from over 60 providers, removing the need for developers to integrate with each model vendor separately and avoiding vendor lock-in. The service spans technical work in large language models, model routing, API infrastructure and developer tooling.

The company's product set extends beyond simple aggregation. Intelligent model routing directs requests across models and providers, with automatic fallbacks when a provider fails. Consolidated billing covers all providers without subscriptions, and two reliability features - response healing, which repairs malformed JSON outputs, and zero completion insurance, which covers failed completions - address common failure modes in production LLM use. OpenRouter also publishes public model rankings derived from real-world usage data.

By the company's account, the platform serves more than 5 million users globally and processes over 100 trillion tokens annually. It raised $40m in a Series A round backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures and Sequoia Capital. Transparency in pricing and in model performance is a stated organising principle of the business.
