Merlin Labs

Merlin Labs builds Merlin Pilot, AI software designed to fly aircraft autonomously from takeoff to touchdown, with 800+ flight hours across five aircraft types.

Merlin Labs builds the software intended to let aircraft fly themselves. Its Merlin Pilot system translates the skills of human pilots into code that can think and adapt in real time, with the aim of autonomous flight from take-off to touchdown. The product has logged more than 800 flight hours and has been flown on five aircraft types. The company holds more than $100m in prime contracts from military customers.

The work sits at the intersection of several demanding disciplines: artificial intelligence, certified aviation software, real-time adaptive systems, flight operations and regulatory engineering. The team numbers more than 100 experts in AI and certified software, working across engineering, flight operations and regulatory affairs. Building trust with governments, regulators and customers is a stated priority.

Merlin Labs has a presence in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Zealand, and operates in the aviation, aerospace and defence sectors, including flight test facilities and government-facing programmes. The company describes its operating ethos as \"Find a way or make one\" and positions its work around solving hard problems at the meeting point of aviation safety and autonomy.
