Kairos Power

Kairos Power develops and commercializes fluoride salt-cooled high-temperature reactors (KP-FHR) using TRISO fuel, with demonstration and manufacturing sites across the United States.

Kairos Power is an American nuclear energy company founded in 2016 that is developing and commercializing fluoride salt-cooled high-temperature reactors, known as KP-FHR, to support the transition to clean energy. The KP-FHR design combines proven TRISO fuel with a fluoride salt coolant, with the stated aim of delivering inherent safety, affordable costs and flexible operation.

The company takes a vertically integrated approach to reactor development, spanning advanced reactor design, TRISO fuel technology, nuclear manufacturing and reactor demonstration and testing. Its Hermes demonstration reactor series is an iterative programme intended to serve as the critical path to commercial deployment. Hermes 1 became the first non-water-cooled reactor to receive a construction permit from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Kairos Power operates three U.S. facilities: a headquarters in Alameda, California; a manufacturing development campus in Albuquerque, New Mexico; and a reactor demonstration campus in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The company works with partners including Google, the Tennessee Valley Authority and leading U.S. utilities, and operates in sectors including electric utilities, grid stability and industrial energy. Its development strategy emphasises building and testing real hardware and learning from it.
