Coder

Coder provides a self-hosted cloud development platform that lets developers and platform teams run parallel AI coding agents in Terraform-defined, governed environments on their own infrastructure.

Coder builds a self-hosted cloud development platform that allows developers and platform teams to run parallel AI coding agents in governed environments on their own infrastructure. Environments are defined as code with Terraform, which means teams can provision any infrastructure, AI agent, operating system or IDE - from virtual machines to Kubernetes, and from Jupyter to VS Code. The platform also supports IDE integration, security and policy controls, and self-hosted deployment.

The product originated as a tool for spinning up cloud workspaces. It has since expanded to cover secure, scalable development environments more broadly, with an emphasis on helping developers build faster while platform teams standardise and retain control. Governance of AI adoption is handled through configurable boundaries and policies, so that agents run inside secure, self-hosted environments rather than on third-party infrastructure.

Coder's customers include Dropbox, Palantir, Discord, Mercedes-Benz and Goldman Sachs; the company serves developers and platform teams at some of the world's largest organisations. Its stated principles are being open by design and secure by default, with a focus on developer productivity alongside governance and standards. The company was founded out of frustration with outdated developer workflows.
