Center for a New American Security

An independent, bipartisan nonprofit think tank founded in 2007 in Washington, D.C., producing national security and defense policy research, analysis and public events.

The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) is an independent, bipartisan, nonprofit think tank founded in 2007 and based in Washington, D.C. It develops national security and defense policy through fact-based research and analysis, with the aim of shaping the U.S. national security debate and informing leaders in government, the private sector and society. Its work spans national security policy research, defense policy analysis, strategic studies, foreign policy analysis and public policy research.

The organisation's output takes three main forms. Research publications and policy analysis are written to influence the choices of American leaders and to advance U.S. interests and strategy. Events and public engagement bring together policymakers, experts and the public to shape the national security debate in the United States and beyond. Research projects are conducted under CNAS's own sole editorial direction and under strict intellectual independence.

As a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organisation, CNAS takes no institutional positions on policy issues and does not engage in lobbying activity. Published content reflects the views of individual authors alone. The institution describes its approach to policy development as pragmatic and principled, and states that it complies fully with all applicable federal, state and local laws.
