Description

Create your best future and join Westpac as a Senior Engineer - Mainframe.

What’s the role?

This role sits within the Customer & Engineering unit, delivering customer servicing, credit assessment, and product originations technology via online and staff‑facing channels. In addition to maintaining group‑critical applications, you will help drive the adoption of AI‑driven, agentic development for COBOL systems —automating coding, testing, documentation, and change delivery while meeting the bank’s regulatory and security obligations.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Design, develop, and support COBOL and CAP COBOL applications on z/OS supporting high‑volume, business‑critical workloads.
  • Maintain and enhance online IMS and batch applications, ensuring reliability, performance, and operational excellence.
  • Develop and support DB2, IMSDB and sequential file-based data processing solutions.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for COBOL and mainframe practices, defining coding standards, patterns, and modernisation guidelines.
  • Ensure that agreed standards and processes within Westpac are adhered to ensure fulfilment of regulatory obligations.
  • Apply an AI‑first approach to automate coding, testing, data mappings, orchestration, and documentation.

What do I need?

  • Strong experience in COBOL development within large‑scale enterprise or banking environments.
  • Exposure to or hands‑on experience with CAP COBOL in production systems.
  • Proven experience working with IMS DB (data access, schemas, program interfaces).
  • Solid understanding of z/OS mainframe environments.
  • Proven experience with Endeavor.
  • Exposure to Git, Bitbucket.
  • Computer Science (or closely related degree) with a major in software engineering or equivalent.
