General Statement of Duties
Engages in responsible fire suppression activities, operating fire equipment, and actively participating in firefighting duties.
An employee in this class participates in the 24-hour operation of fire suppression at the city’s fire department. Responsibilities include being a relief driver-operator of fire apparatus and equipment, performing firefighting tasks, maintaining equipment and apparatus, and participating in public relations activities. Compliance with state-mandated suppression training and inspections is a key responsibility. The position requires up-to-date knowledge of cutting-edge fire suppression techniques and equipment. Effective decision-making under pressure is crucial, especially during fire responses. This role demands adherence to established policies and procedures while exercising considerable independence and judgment. Work is performed under the general supervision of a fire lieutenant or fire captain, with evaluation based on the quality and effectiveness of suppression activities and adherence to training requirements. Positions in this classification are subject to the overtime pay requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Illustrative Examples of Work
Responds to major alarms and actively participates in firefighting operations, including driving/operating fire apparatus & equipment.
Connects hoses to hydrants and uses hoses to apply water or chemicals to fires.
Monitors radio transmissions and relays messages as needed.
Ensures availability of all equipment for use by fire personnel.
Inspects stations and equipment for proper appearance and operation.
Maintains and cleans fire apparatus, equipment, station building, and related facilities.
Develops relationships with the community, provides general information on fire safety, conducts station tours, and facilitates fire extinguisher classes for businesses.
Participates in community improvement projects as directed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Considerable knowledge of the operation of firefighting equipment.

Considerable knowledge of the geography, streets, and layout of the city and the location of hydrants.

Ability to comply with physical fitness and training requirements and standards.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Work in this position is considered heavy (exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects). Physical activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Visual acuity is required for visual inspections and operating equipment. Exposure to typical hazards of public safety and emergency response work, including contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids, is expected. The role involves working in various environmental conditions, including extreme heat and cold, noise, vibration, exposure to high temperatures and chemicals, atmospheric conditions, oils, confined spaces, and narrow passageways. The employee is required to wear a respirator (SCBA).
Completion of high school or equivalent, firefighting and medical experience, and knowledge of fire ground operations are required.
