Description:
The Downhill Mountain Bike Mechanic / Instructor / Rental Technician is a multi-disciplinary role responsible for maintaining a high-quality fleet of downhill bikes, delivering exceptional guest service within the rental shop, and providing safe, engaging instruction to riders of varying skill levels. This position plays a key role in ensuring guests have a safe, enjoyable, and memorable mountain biking experience through expert equipment preparation, professional instruction, and knowledgeable support.
This role combines mechanical expertise, strong interpersonal skills, and a passion for mountain biking and outdoor recreation.
Key Responsibilities:
Bike Mechanic
Perform daily inspection, maintenance, and repair of downhill mountain bike rental fleet.
Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues including suspension, braking systems, drivetrains, and wheel systems.
Complete preventative maintenance to ensure bikes meet safety and performance standards.
Maintain accurate service records and maintenance schedules.
Assist with seasonal fleet builds, tear-downs, and inventory management.
Ensure workshop cleanliness, organization, and adherence to safety procedures.
Instructing
Deliver beginner to intermediate downhill mountain bike lessons in a safe and supportive environment.
Provide clear instruction on bike handling, trail etiquette, safety awareness, and progression techniques.
Adapt teaching style to suit different ages, abilities, and learning styles.
Conduct equipment checks prior to lessons and ensure riders are properly fitted.
Promote safe riding practices and mountain responsibility at all times.
Rental Technician
Assist guests with bike rentals including sizing, fitting, and equipment setup.
Educate guests on bike operation, suspension setup, and trail recommendations.
Provide outstanding guest service by creating a welcoming and professional environment.
Process rental transactions and maintain accurate documentation as required.
Support daily shop operations including opening/closing procedures.
Experience/Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Strong mechanical knowledge of downhill mountain bikes.
Previous bike mechanic experience preferred (shop or bike park environment an asset).
Experience coaching, instructing, or guiding mountain biking preferred.
Passion for downhill mountain biking and strong riding ability.
Excellent communication and customer service skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Instructor certifications (PMBIA or equivalent) or willingness to obtain.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift and maneuver bikes up to 50 lbs (23 kg).
Standing for extended periods.
Working in workshop and outdoor trail environments.
Ability to ride downhill terrain safely and confidently.
