Job Title: Hemphill Middle School Head Girls Basketball Coach
Location: Hemphill Middle School
Reports To: Athletic Director / Building Principal
Season: Winter (3rd Quarter, est. 9 Weeks)

 

Job Goal: The Hemphill Middle School Head Girls Basketball Coach is responsible for leading and developing the middle school girls basketball program in a way that promotes student growth, sportsmanship, teamwork, and school pride. The coach will provide leadership, organization, and instruction to student-athletes while supporting the academic mission of the school and modeling positive character and leadership.

 

The head coach is expected to create a safe, structured, and competitive environment where student-athletes can develop basketball fundamentals, work ethic, accountability, and respect for teammates, coaches, opponents, and officials.

 

Essential Requirements: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability needed for the position.

  • Experienced understanding of basketball and has participated in basketball.
  • Experience working with middle school or youth athletes preferred.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and resolve conflict with students, parents, and community groups.
  • Ability to provide leadership and act with professionalism and integrity with school staff, students, parents, and community groups.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, parents, and staff.
  • Commitment to the educational mission and values of the school.
  • Must meet district coaching requirements including background check and coaching certifications.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Previous basketball coaching experience preferred.
  • Positive role model for student-athletes.
  • Ability to teach basketball fundamentals and develop young athletes.
  • Strong character, integrity, and sportsmanship.
  • Enthusiastic about building a strong middle school program that feeds into the high school girls basketball program.

Time Commitment:

  • Daily practices during the season.
  • Games as scheduled.
  • Pre-season planning and organization.
  • Meetings with the athletic director and coaching staff as needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Program Leadership

  • Models sports-like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct toward students, officials, and spectators.
  • Organize and oversee all aspects of the Hemphill Middle School girls basketball program.
  • Develop and implement a program philosophy focused on skill development, teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship.
  • Provide leadership and direction to assistant coaches.
  • Promote a positive culture that reflects the values of the school and community.
  • Work collaboratively with the high school girls basketball head coach to align program expectations, terminology, and fundamental skill development in order to support a smooth transition for student-athletes into the high school program.
  • Support vertical program development by reinforcing foundational skills, basketball IQ, and team concepts that prepare athletes for future participation at the high school level.
  • Maintain open communication with the high school coaching staff regarding athlete development, program philosophy, and opportunities to build continuity between the middle school and high school programs.

Practice & Game Management

  • Plan and conduct organized, developmentally appropriate practices that emphasize fundamentals and safety.
  • Teach proper basketball techniques and strategies appropriate for middle school athletes.
  • Prepare the team for competition through structured drills, conditioning, and game preparation.
  • Monitor athlete attendance, behavior, and academic status.
  • Supervise athletes before, during, and after practices and games.

Student-Athlete Development

  • Foster personal growth, leadership, accountability, and teamwork among players.
  • Encourage and monitor academic success of student-athletes.
  • Promote good sportsmanship and respect for officials, opponents, and teammates.
  • Ensure student-athletes understand expectations regarding behavior, attendance, and eligibility.
  • Manage all operational, fiscal, and administrative activities for the girls basketball program.
  • Participate in special activities including parents’ night, banquets, award nights, and prep assemblies.

Safety & Compliance

  • Maintain a safe environment and enforce proper equipment usage and safety protocols.
  • Follow all district, league, and school policies regarding athletics.
  • Comply with the rules and regulations as established by the Colorado High School Activities Association.
  • Complete required certifications (CPR/First Aid, concussion training, etc.).
  • Understand the signs and symptoms of concussion and remove players that are exhibiting signs and symptoms.
  • Monitor injuries and communicate with school administration and parents when necessary.

Communication

  • Communicate effectively with players, parents, assistant coaches, and school administration.
  • Provide clear expectations for athletes and families regarding schedules, conduct, and program goals.
  • Coordinate schedules, transportation needs, and equipment with the athletic director.

Program Organization

  • Assist with equipment inventory, distribution, and maintenance.
  • Support offseason interest and development opportunities when appropriate.
  • Help promote participation and enthusiasm for the girls basketball program within the school community.
  • Ability to drive students in a school vehicle to and from competitions

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, Bonding and/or Testing Required

  • Successfully pass the CHSAA coaches test, acquire CHSAA coaching registration, and complete a concussion course per State Legislation and CHSAA By-Laws.
  • CPR & AED Certifications required.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:  Between sitting, standing, and walking throughout the day; lifting up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis and 10 pounds on a frequent basis; occasionally stooping, kneeling, crouching, overhead reaching, and performing fine motor activity; frequently sitting, standing, walking, balancing, and reaching at desk and floor level with firm and simple grasping. The work requires constant seeing, hearing, and talking.

 

FLSA Status: Non-exempt
