POSITION SUMMARY:

The Lead Lifeguard is responsible for overseeing the pool area including life guarding, testing, recording of chemicals, maintenance of equipment and overall cleanliness of the pool areas. Is the primary point of contact for aquatics related inquiries and issues in the absence of director level staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. General
    • Maintains a neat and clean pool area.
    • Consistently demonstrates excellent customer service by having a friendly disposition and is knowledgeable and helpful with all information provided.
    • Responds to patron concerns in a timely, appropriate manner.
    • Reports all incidents and concerns to Aquatics Director or Associate Director.
    • Attends staff meetings and trainings as deemed necessary by the Aquatics Director.
    • Follows all policies and procedures listed in the Employee Handbook, Aquatics Procedural Handbook, and Pool Operator Handbook.
  2. Pool Operation
    • Maintains appropriate chemical levels in the pool.
    • Tests and records conditions of pool water and takes action to correct improperly balanced water. Advises Aquatics Director or designee of action taken.
    • Maintains knowledge of the pump room.
    • Performs maintenance duties when assigned.
  3. Lifeguard
    • Monitors and watches the pools during all aquatic activities following established YMCA procedures.
    • Is familiar with and prepared to use the Emergency Procedures when an emergency occurs at the pool.
    • Maintains lifeguard safety equipment on person at all times while on active surveillance duty.
    • Performs rescue measures and appropriate care when required.
  4. Lead Lifeguard
    • Ensures that lifeguards are following and enforcing YMCA policy while on their shift.
    • Functions as the primary point of contact for aquatics related customer service issues in the absence of director level staff during their shift.
    • Ensures compliance of the facility and staff with all related Health Department regulations during their shift.
    • Advises Aquatics Director or designee of any needed supplies or higher level repairs.
    • Conducts orientations/shadow shifts for new lifeguards
    • Assists Aquatics Director or Site Coordinator in delivering in-service training and staff meetings.
    • Schedules and performs routine pool maintenance.
    • Meets with Aquatics Director weekly to report on staff behaviors and any facility or equipment needs.


Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

 

  1. Certifications:
    1. Frederick County Pool Operator’s License
    2. American Red Cross Deep Water Lifeguarding Certification including CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid
    3. Administering Emergency Oxygen (must be acquired within 90 days of hire)
    4. Lifeguards at Camp West Mar must acquire Waterfront Lifeguard Certification before the start of the camp season
  2. Ability to comprehend simple instructions, written correspondence; present information in an oral format; read and interpret documents such as policies and procedures; and speak effectively in front of people.
  3. At least 18 years of age.
  4. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  5. At least one year experience as a lifeguard or equivalent.
