Instructor I - Athletics (Golf)

Work Hours: Monday-Friday 2:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m.

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Athletic Instructor is responsible for planning, organizing, and leading athletic instruction within the Expect Excellence program. The position oversees daily program activities, ensures participant safety, maintains equipment and supplies, and delivers structured, engaging instruction regularly to elementary-age students occasionally to middle and high-school age students. Athletic Instructors serve as positive role models and work collaboratively with program leadership to provide high-quality athletic programming that supports skill development, teamwork, and personal growth.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no formal supervisory authority over City employees. The incumbent provides direct supervision, instruction, and leadership to program participants during athletic activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Completes required documentation including hours worked, class sizes, and program photographs.

  2. Collaborates with the Athletics Program Manager to develop lesson plans, prepare supply lists, and coordinate program logistics.

  3. Serves as a positive role model by demonstrating professionalism, sportsmanship, and integrity.

  4. Monitors equipment condition and reports replenishment or maintenance needs.

  5. Sets up, distributes, collects, and maintains athletic equipment and supplies.

  6. Maintains order and positive behavior during practices and classes.

  7. Ensures the safety and well-being of participants by enforcing program rules and safety guidelines.

  8. Develops structured, engaging, and age-appropriate lesson plans throughout the semester.

  9. Leads and instructs athletic classes for elementary-age students in assigned sport(s).

  10. Monitors and oversees daily activities within assigned Expect Excellence athletic programs.

  3. Ability to develop and deliver engaging, age-appropriate athletic instruction.

  4. Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.

  5. Ability to effectively instruct and manage elementary-age children.

  6. Working knowledge of specialized athletic disciplines including basketball, baseball, softball, football, soccer, volleyball, golf, track and field, wrestling, and strength & agility training.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. High School Diploma or Equivalent

  2. Possession of a valid Alabama Driver’s License.

  3. Ability to instruct and supervise groups of elementary-age students.

  4. Education and/or experience in Golf.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Experience developing lesson plans or structured athletic programs.

  2. Previous coaching or instructional experience with youth or elementary-age students.

  3. Advanced education, certification, or formal training in a specific athletic discipline (Golf).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors (classroom & gymnasium) and outdoors (fields). The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
