JOB FUNCTION: Under the direction of a Fire Lieutenant, this position performed firefighting, emergency medical, and rescue operations. Additional duties include operating apparatus, maintaining equipment, providing public education, and performing station duties. This is a skilled position that requires extensive training and teamwork in potentially hazardous conditions.

EMT Certification - $21.33/hour

Paramedic Certification - $25.05/hour

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties are typical for this position, but dependent upon the level of skill, ability, and experience of the individual. They are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Respond to fire, rescue, medical, and hazardous material incidents.

  • Perform fire suppression, rescue, ventilation, salvage, overhaul, and patient care.

  • Drive and operate fire apparatus and emergency vehicles as assigned.

  • Conduct inspections, maintain equipment, and ensure operational readiness.

  • Complete reports, maintain logs, and input data into records management systems.

  • Participate in training, public education, fire prevention activities, and station duties.

  • Maintain a high standard of physical fitness and readiness.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Entry Requirements and Skills:

  • High School diploma or equivalent. Associate Degree in Fire Science, EMS, or related field preferred.

  • Certification by the State of Iowa as an EMT. Paramedic certification, preferred (National Registry Preference).

  • Current CPR  certification.

  • Current ACLS certification (PALS/PHTLS/NRP preferred). 

  • Firefighter I and Hazardous Materials Operations certifications, may obtain within 12 months of hire. Firefighter II certification preferred.

  • Valid Iowa driver’s license; ability to obtain CDL.

  • Ability to meet physical requirements and perform in stressful environments.


Physical Requirements/Essential Functions:

  • Must pass annual physical and department agility test.

  • Required to sit, stand, walk, lift, carry, push, pull, climb, stoop, bend, kneel, crawl, and reach.

  • Must lift up to 100 lbs occasionally, 50 lbs frequently, and 25 lbs regularly.

  • Exposure to hazardous materials, confined spaces, extreme weather, loud noises, and infectious agents.

  • Ability to use fire and EMS equipment, including: SCBA, hoses, ladders, extinguishers, rescue tools, power/hand tools, and patient care devices.

  • Ability to apply job knowledge in a safe, efficient, and policy-compliant manner.

  • Skilled in computer applications for word processing, spreadsheets, and incident documentation.


Work Environment:

  • Duties are performed both indoors and outdoors in varying and extreme conditions.

  • Frequent exposure to fire, smoke, chemicals, biohazards, and other potentially dangerous environments.

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including heavy and bulky gear.

  • Work may involve irregular hours, extended shifts, and high-stress emergencies.

  • Ladders, hoses, fire extinguishers, self-contained breathing apparatus, axes, saws, or grinders.

  • Portable lights, extrication equipment, air compressors, pumps, generators, or hand tools.

  • Various EMS equipment, chemicals, gurneys, and other related on-scene equipment.

  •  Activity may vary with each response and will not likely be the same each day.
