Summary
A Field Service Technician (FST) is responsible for installation, commissioning, scheduled, and emergency service on products serviced by Fairbanks Morse Defense, commensurate with appropriate certification.
Products may include, but are not limited to:
Diesel engines
Electrical controls
Roll-up doors
Cranes
Elevators
Davits
The FST is required to establish, promote, and maintain excellent rapport with all customers, co-workers, sales representatives, and others as appropriate. The FST must also maintain continuous communication with Regional Offices and direct managers.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Role
Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
Diagnose problems and develop solutions for qualified products
Work independently on qualified products
May occasionally be assigned to shop duties such as general machining, part inspections, assembly, testing, and warehouse work
Technical
Meet qualifications for providing Tech Rep support services
Stay current on Engineering Change Orders, Field Service Change Notices, and Service Information Letters
Keep service manuals updated with the latest revisions
Document work performed on Service Reports and write Condition Found Reports
Safety
Operate safely in accordance with published guidelines
Wear appropriate PPE as required
Report all work-related accidents or injuries immediately
Complete annual safety training as outlined in the regional schedule
Administration
Provide accurate and timely reporting (timecards, expense reports, mileage, project closures, etc.)
Obtain and maintain certification per Service Progression Requirements
Provide estimated time of arrival to customers when applicable
Maintain company property (vehicle, credit cards, PPE, test equipment, laptop, etc.)
Customer Satisfaction
Provide proper and adequate communication to internal and external customers
Complete maintenance documentation properly and deliver to the customer upon completion
Strive to achieve a “first time fix” on all service calls
Maintain customer satisfaction rates in accordance with company guidelines
Performance
Maximize productivity by combining service opportunities
Complete all work efficiently and on schedule
Maintain utilization rate per company standards
Adhere to company dress code and safety regulations
Follow escalation processes and procedures
Communicate effectively with all levels of the organization
Act as a role model for other Field Service Technicians — lead by example
Conduct yourself with professionalism and high-quality service delivery
Manage stressful internal and external customer situations with diplomacy
All other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Educational Requirements
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED required
One or more of the following:
Associate degree in technical discipline and four years of military or relevant industry experience
Four years of military or relevant industry experience in similar or equivalent product lines serviced by FMD
Additional Requirements:
Reliable team player with professional demeanor
Knowledge of diesel and spark gas engine test equipment and theory (preferred)
Basic understanding of gas compression and associated hazards (preferred)
Ability to read and interpret product line diagrams and blueprints
Foundation in pneumatics, hydraulics, PLCs, and electronic controls (preferred)
Ability to troubleshoot independently and restore equipment to full operation
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Excellent organization and planning skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Strong mechanical aptitude
Valid driver’s license and eligibility for company credit card
Ability to travel up to 75% (domestic and international, including weekends, evenings, holidays, and emergency callouts)
Must hold a valid U.S. Passport or be able to obtain one within 3 months of hire
Must meet NOFORN requirements for access to Unclassified Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information — proof of U.S. Citizenship required (U.S. Passport, Birth Certificate, or Naturalization Certificate)
Physical Requirements
While performing duties, the FST is regularly required to:
Stand, walk, use hands/fingers, handle or feel tools or components
Reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
Talk, hear, and smell
Sit and climb or balance frequently
Vision requirements include close, distant, color, peripheral, and depth perception, plus the ability to adjust focus.Must be able to regularly lift at least 35 pounds.
