Position: APS6 equivalent Software Engineer (Developer)

Start date: July 2026
Duration: Approx 12 months with potential to extend 2x12 months
Pay rate: Rates negotiable dependent on skills and experience
Security requirements: Must be an Australian Citizen and hold a current Baseline security clearance at commencement
Overview:
Our client is seeking experienced Software Engineers to support the delivery of multiple ICT initiatives within a large and complex government environment. You will join a dynamic CIO function delivering critical digital services that support business operations and broader stakeholder outcomes.
This role offers the opportunity to work across modern, cloud-based architectures in a fast-paced, agile delivery environment. Successful candidates will contribute to both backend and frontend development, working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver secure, scalable, and high-quality solutions.
Responsibilities:
- Design, build and maintain secure backend services using modern .NET and REST APIs
- Develop responsive React frontends that integrate seamlessly with backend services
- Integrate internal and third-party systems across event-driven and API-led architectures
- Apply secure coding practices and manage secrets using appropriate tools
- Develop and maintain automated testing across unit, integration and UI layers
- Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and enforce quality assurance practices
- Participate in peer code reviews and uphold development standards
- Produce technical documentation, release notes and operational runbooks
- Communicate progress, risks and dependencies to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Collaborate with product, UX, security and operations teams in an agile environment
- Mentor team members and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement
Experience/requirements:
- Demonstrated experience delivering secure, enterprise-grade web applications across backend and frontend
- Strong expertise in modern .NET (including ASP.NET Web APIs) and React development
- Experience with REST API design, including versioning, OpenAPI/Swagger, and OAuth2/OIDC
- Hands-on experience with Azure cloud services, including App Services, Functions, Azure SQL, Service Bus/Event Grid, and API Management
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Azure DevOps) and monitoring tools (e.g. Application Insights)
- Strong understanding of secure development practices, including secrets management and compliance with security frameworks
- Experience integrating with third-party platforms (e.g. CRM systems) and modernising legacy systems
- Proven ability to produce high-quality technical documentation
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills across technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience working in agile, multidisciplinary teams and adapting to evolving requirements
Desirable:
- Experience with automated testing frameworks (e.g. Playwright, Selenium, Jest) and quality engineering practices
- Experience delivering within agile teams and contributing to iterative, user-focused delivery
