GAF

GAF is North America's largest roofing and waterproofing manufacturer, producing roofing products for homes and businesses across the United States. The company operates factories throughout the country and, by its own account, protects more American homes and businesses than any other roofing product. Its work spans residential and commercial roofing, waterproofing, and the underlying materials science, including asphalt roofing products, shingle manufacturing, and materials chemistry.

The firm was founded in 1886 in Bound Brook, New Jersey, by chemist William Griscom, trading as The Standard Paint Company. Its first major innovation came in 1892 with ready-to-lay asphalt roll roofing, an early advance in roofing technology. In 1967 it launched GAF Timberline, the residential shingle that reinvented the category and remains an iconic product line. More than 135 years of operation underpin the business.

Across that period the company has combined deep industry expertise with continuing technical development, and describes its mission as protecting homes, businesses and the people behind them. Manufacturing excellence in the United States remains central to its operations.
