Universal Rail Solutions Inc. is currently seeking qualified Thermite Welders to support railway construction, maintenance, and repair projects across Ontario. The Opportunity As a Thermite Welder, you will be responsible for performing high‑quality thermite rail welds to support the construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation of railway track infrastructure. Working as part of a unionized track maintenance or construction crew, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring rail integrity, alignment, and long‑term performance — while complying with railway standards, Transport Canada requirements, Ontario OHSA, CROR, and internal safety procedures. This role is about more than welding — it’s about craftsmanship, accountability, and safety‑driven execution in a demanding rail environment. What You’ll Do Perform thermite welding of rail joints in accordance with approved railway procedures and specifications. Prepare rail ends, molds, crucibles, and welding materials prior to welding operations. Conduct pre‑weld and post‑weld inspections, including grinding, finishing, and final quality checks. Operate welding, cutting, grinding, and measuring tools safely and effectively. Ensure compliance with Transport Canada regulations, Ontario OHSA, railway standards, and company safety policies. Participate in job briefings, hazard assessments, and safety meetings. Maintain accurate documentation related to welding activities, inspections, and production. Maintain welding equipment and tools in safe, serviceable condition. Work collaboratively with Forepersons, Track Maintenance crews, and other unionized employees. Assist with additional track maintenance or construction activities as required under the Collective Agreement. Report unsafe conditions, incidents, defects, or non‑conforming work immediately to supervision. What You Bring Certified or qualified Thermite Welder (railway‑recognized certification or equivalent experience). Minimum 2 years of railway thermite welding experience preferred. Strong knowledge of rail welding procedures, tolerances, and quality standards. Ability to read and understand work instructions, drawings, and technical specifications. Strong attention to detail and commitment to workmanship quality. Ability to work effectively within a unionized team environment. Physically capable of performing demanding manual work, including lifting, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision once qualified. Adaptability to changing work locations, schedules, and outdoor conditions. Valid Ontario G Class Driver’s Licence or ability to obtain. Willingness to obtain and/or maintain union membership.
