DESCRIPTION:
The physiotherapist is an integral member of the interprofessional team. Through the provision of patient and non-patient care responsibilities, the physiotherapist enhances the quality of life of patients by assessing, planning, and implementing plans of care to maintain, improve and restore physical functioning and cardio-respiratory health, alleviate pain and prevent functional decline as a result of hospitalization, disease, injury, medical or surgical intervention.
Within this role the Physiotherapist is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the Kingston Health Sciences Centre strategy. As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care in all we do.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Care Responsibilities:
- Review referrals for prioritization
- Plan, organize and establish patient care priorities based upon identified needs in collaboration with the medical team using a patient and family centred approach
- Provide assessment, consultation and treatment of referred pediatric patients and families
- Utilize evidence-based practice and best practice guidelines in the physiotherapy plan of care.
- Utilize outcome measures to guide clinical decision-making
- Provide education to pediatric patient and families as it relates to the physiotherapy plan of care
- Provide direction and supervision to physiotherapy assistants participating in the physiotherapy plan of care
- Provide direction and supervision to health science students participating in the physiotherapy plan of care
- Be an active and collaborative member of the care team
- Complete documentation according to College and organizational standards
Indirect Care Responsibilities:
- Enter workload data accurately and at the required frequency
- Participate in orientation of new staff
- Participate in program and discipline-specific team meetings
- Participate in program and discipline-specific educational opportunities
- Share newly acquired knowledge and skills with physiotherapy colleagues and the interprofessional team
- Participate in continuous quality improvement and accreditation activities
- Complete all mandatory KGH Learning Management System education modules
- Participate in approved research
- Perform other duties that may be requested
Professional Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate current registration with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario
- Adhere to the standards for practice outlined by the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario
- Perform only those authorized activities that he/she have rostered with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario
- Maintain a high standard of clinical competence through professional development and quality assurance activities
- Contribute to the preparation of health science students through knowledge translation, practical learning and mentorship.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of a recognized school of Physiotherapy.
- New graduate must be eligible for membership with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.
- Active, unrestricted license to practice with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.
- 6 months experience in a pediatric clinic setting is an asset
- Strong knowledge of musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiovascular conditions impact on physical function
- Knowledge of the most common pediatric injuries and illnesses, especially as related to orthopedic and Cystic Fibrosis care
- Knowledge of airway clearance techniques, orthopedic exercise instruction, splint/brace application, positioning for serial cast application
- Ability to assist with clinic patient flow, ie reviewing referrals for mechanism of orthopedic injury/method of immobilization.
- Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and respectfully
- Demonstrated ability to work within a collaborative care team
- Proficient with computer applications (i.e. Email, Internet, Excel, workload measurement tool)
- Proven ability to attend work regularly.
- Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The incumbent will be required to meet the physical demands as described for the area of work.
