Position Summary

Monitor pools to provide assistance and protection to participants; instruct or coach groups or individuals in exercise activities for the primary purpose of personal fitness; demonstrate techniques and form, observe participants, and explain to them corrective measures necessary to improve their skills; develop and implement individualized approaches to exercise; and perform other duties as assigned.

Job Duties

  • Patrol pool areas to ensure safety or enforce regulations.
  • Rescue people from hazardous situations.
  • Request emergency personnel.
  • Administer first aid.
  • Warn individuals about rule violations or safety concerns.
  • Inspect facilities for cleanliness; and equipment to ensure safety or proper functioning.
  • Record information about environmental conditions.
  • Maintain operational records; supply or equipment inventories; client information or service records; and water save and accident forms.
  • Observe individuals' activities to gather information or compile evidence.
  • Monitor environmental conditions to detect hazards; and pool area.
  • Provide safety training.
  • Assist customers to ensure comfort or safety.
  • Participate in athletic events.
  • Teach exercise or fitness techniques.
  • Develop educational or training programs.
  • Evaluate capabilities or training needs.
  • Demonstrate activity techniques or equipment use.
  • Enforce rules or regulations.
  • Explain regulations, policies, or procedures.
  • Organize recreational activities or events.
  • Distribute resources to patrons or employees.
  • Promote services or programs.
  • Attend all mandatory in-service training meetings and staff meetings.
  • Report broken safety or mechanical equipment to the manager or head guard.
  • Wear required staff attire at all times, i.e. approved swimsuit, staff shirt, etc.
  • Respond to patron's questions and requests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Customer and Personal Service - Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services which includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Public Safety and Security - Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
  • Education and Training - Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
  • Psychology - Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
  • Monitoring - Keeping track of how well people and/or groups are doing in order to make improvements.
  • Oral Expression – Communicating by speaking clearly to others.
  • Social Perceptiveness - Understanding people's reactions.
  • Instructing - Teaching people how to do something.
  • Service Orientation - Looking for ways to help people.
  • Far Vision - Seeing details that are far away.
  • Dynamic Strength - Exercising for a long time without your muscles getting tired.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current lifeguard, CPR and first aid certifications.
  • Knowledge of water safety practices and usage of water safety equipment.
  • Swimming skills test completion.
  • Must be at least fifteen years old.
