POSITION SUMMARY

The Lifeguard plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of all patrons at aquatic facilities by actively monitoring swimming areas and responding promptly to emergencies. This position requires vigilance, quick decision-making, and the ability to perform lifesaving techniques such as CPR and first aid to prevent accidents and injuries. Lifeguards also provide water safety guidance to promote safe swimming practices and enhance the overall experience of visitors. The role involves maintaining a clean and safe environment, enforcing facility rules, and collaborating with team members to uphold high safety standards. Ultimately, the Lifeguard is responsible for creating a secure and welcoming atmosphere where individuals of all ages can enjoy aquatic activities with confidence.

REQUIREMENTS, ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES

  • Monitor swimming areas continuously toidentifyand respond to potential hazards or emergencies.
  • Perform rescues and administer CPR, AED, and first aid as necessary toassistindividuals in distress.
  • Provide safety education to patrons to promote responsible aquatic behavior.
  • Enforce facility rules and regulations tomaintaina safe andorderlyenvironment.
  • Collaborate with team members and management to conduct safety drills andmaintainemergency preparedness.
  • Maintain cleanliness and proper organization of the pool area and related equipment.
  • Document incidents and communicate effectively with supervisors and emergency personnel whenrequired.
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Document and report all accidents to the Aquatics Manager.
  • Attend all scheduled staff meetings and training.
  • Complete daily cash reports.
  • Assist with the Point of Sale (POS) system, selling daily admissions and merchandise.
  • Inform the Manager of Head Lifeguard when supplies are needed and if equipment needs repaired.
  • Other duties as assigned or asrequired.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Current certification in CPR/AED and First Aid from the American Red Cross or equivalent recognized organization.
  • Strong knowledge of water rescue techniques and emergency response protocols.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and communicate clearly with patrons and colleagues.
  • At least 16 years of age.

Physical Demands and Work Environment 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job: Physical exertions to manually move, lift, carry, or push heavy objects up to 50 pounds. Climbing in and out of the swimming pool, up and down ladders. Being alert on stand in high heat and sunlight for 30 minutes and up to 1 hour. The ability to perform and maintain the lifeguard certification swim test requirements.

REIMBURSEMENT POLICY

50% of course cost after completing the season and meeting the below requirements once every two years: 

Requirements: To be eligible for reimbursements, the following criteria must be met:  

  1. Lifeguards must work a minimum of280 hoursduring the entire pool season.
  1. Lifeguards must work a minimum of40daysduringthe pool season.
  1. A lifeguard must have an on-target or better employee review. Lifeguard reviews will be completed in August.

New Hires: A copy of the lifeguard certification must be presented prior to being hired.

Re-Certified Lifeguards: A copy of the lifeguard’s new certification must be represented before returning to lifeguard duty.

*All lifeguards must provide a receipt or written letter signed by the course instructor stating that the class was paid for. The receipt or signed written letter must be turned into the Recreation Administrative Assistant before starting work. *
