Job Summary

The HVAC Sheet Metal Welder & Installer fabricates, welds, and installs a wide range of commercial mechanical and duct systems according to blueprints and project specifications. This role supports system layout, field installation, equipment setup, safety compliance, and coordination with supervisors, project managers, and other trades. It also requires strong welding skills, physical capability, and the ability to manage tools, materials, and project documentation on active jobsites.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lay out mechanical systems, supports, and related equipment according to blueprints. 
  • Install commercial mechanical systems, including but not limited to:  
  • Packaged rooftop units 
  • Split systems (fan coils, heat pumps, condensing units, ductless splits, etc.) 
  • Central air handling units 
  • Exhaust and intake fans, vents, louvers, and hoods 
  • Various ductwork types: low/medium pressure, flex, spiral, galvanized, aluminum, and black steel 
  • Dampers (volume control, fire, smoke, combination, manual, automated) 
  • Kitchen hoods and associated ventilation systems 
  • Air distribution components such as grilles and registers for ceiling, wall, floor, and duct-mounted installations
    • Determine appropriate welding equipment and methods based on project requirements. 
    • Prepare parts using angle grinders or related tools. 
    • Weld components using manual or semi-automatic equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal, overhead). 
    • Perform plate/structure welding and support mechanical system installation, including non-welded systems such as Victaulic, ProPress, and Aquatherm. 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of commercial sheet metal installation experience. 
  • Prior experience using electrical and manual tools (saws, squares, calipers, grinders, hammer drills, etc.). 
  • Ability to weld to B31.1 standard. 
  • Prior welding experience on mechanical systems (chilled water, hot water, steam, condensate). 
  • Proficiency in Carbon Steel Stick Welding (6010/7018). 
  • Preferred experience in Carbon Steel MIG and Stainless Steel TIG welding. 

Physical Demands

  • Ability to climb, lift, balance, walk, stoop, kneel, and reach overhead. 
  • Capable of lifting or handling up to 80 lbs. 
  • Able to work from ladders, aerial lifts, and scaffolding. 
  • Ability to work in tight spaces or uneven terrain. 
  • Comfortable working in various environmental conditions including outdoor weather, indoor office spaces, and utility plants.
