SUMMARY OF POSITION

Under general supervision of the Aquatics Manager or designee, the Head Lifeguard is responsible for maintaining safety, providing aquatic leadership, and supporting day-to-day operations of aquatic facilities. This position monitors patrons, enforces safety rules, responds to emergencies, provides training and mentorship to lifeguards, and assists in program delivery. The Head Lifeguard functions as a lead worker and senior frontline staff member and does not have full supervisory authority.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The duties listed below are representative of the position and are not intended to be all-inclusive.

  • Monitors pool areas and patrons to maintain a safe aquatic environment; enforces rules, policies, and safety procedures consistently.
  • Provides direct rescue, first aid, and emergency response as required.
  • Leads and mentors lifeguard staff by providing guidance, coaching, and on-shift instruction.
  • Assists in scheduling, coordinating coverage, and monitoring staff performance during shifts.
  • Conducts safety checks of aquatic facilities, including rescue equipment, pool water quality, and operational readiness.
  • Supports the delivery of aquatic programs, including swim lessons, lap swim, water fitness, and special events.
  • Reports incidents, accidents, and unsafe conditions to Aquatics Manager; completes required documentation.
  • Maintains equipment, safety supplies, and records to support facility operations.
  • Communicates with patrons and public groups regarding safety, programs, and facility rules.
  • Assists in training and in-service sessions for lifeguard staff.
  • Performs related duties as assigned to support the safe and efficient operation of aquatic facilities.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job.

  • High school diploma or GED required;
  • One (1) year of experience as a lifeguard, swim instructor, or aquatic staff at a public or private aquatic facility.
  • Experience assisting with training, mentoring, or serving in a lead role on shift preferred.
  • Public sector or municipal aquatic experience preferred.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS
Certain licenses and certifications, if required, may be acquired on the job as agreed upon by the City and employee. Subject to change based on operational needs.
  • Current Lifeguard Certification
  • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid Certification required.
  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification preferred.
  • Other licenses/certifications may be required dependent on assigned division, operational needs, or regulatory requirements (e.g., Pool Chemical Handling, Bloodborne Pathogens, Administering Emergency Oxygen).

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

  • Work is performed primarily in indoor and outdoor aquatic environments, including pool decks and water surfaces
  • Duties involve exposure to water, pool chemicals, wet and slippery surfaces, and varying indoor and outdoor temperatures.
  • Position requires standing, walking, sitting, bending, kneeling, climbing stairs or ladders, and lifting or moving equipment and safety supplies.
  • Requires strong swimming ability and physical endurance to perform rescues and emergency responses.
  • Must be able to communicate verbally and visually monitor patrons and staff effectively.
  • Evening, weekend, holiday, and on-call work may be required to support aquatic programs and emergencies.
