Full-Time Fire Fighter

Position Summary

The Full-Time Fire Fighter responds to fire alarms, medical emergencies, and other emergency calls to protect life and property within the City of Cleveland and the surrounding fire district. Under general supervision, this position operates and maintains fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical apparatus and equipment; participates in firefighting, emergency medical response, hazardous materials incidents, fire prevention, public fire safety education, and ongoing training activities. This position requires physical endurance, sound judgment under pressure, teamwork, and a strong commitment to public service.

Essential Personnel Designation

This position is designated as essential personnel. In the event of a natural or manmade disaster, the employee is required to be available for immediate call-in and response.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential and other important duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Respond to fire alarms, emergency medical calls, rescue situations, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergencies.
  • Perform fire suppression, rescue, ventilation, overhaul, and salvage operations to protect life and property.
  • Provide emergency medical care within the scope of EMT-B, A or P certification, including patient assessment, treatment, and transport.
  • Operate, inspect, clean, and maintain fire apparatus, tools, protective gear, and firefighting equipment.
  • Participate in training drills, continuing education, and certification maintenance as required.
  • Assist with fire prevention activities, inspections, public education programs, and community outreach.
  • Follow all department policies, procedures, safety standards, and incident command protocols.
  • Maintain accurate reports, logs, and documentation related to incidents, training, and equipment.
  • Work cooperatively as part of a fire company and with other emergency response agencies.
  • Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position.


Qualifications

Conditions of Employment

  • Must successfully complete and maintain a criminal background check, drug screening, and pre-employment physical examination.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be able to work 24-hour shifts on a 48/96 schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
  • Must be physically capable of performing strenuous work in hazardous and stressful environments, including extreme heat, smoke, confined spaces, heights, and adverse weather conditions.
  • Must comply with all City and Fire Department safety policies, procedures, and work rules.

 

Required Education, Experience, Certifications & Skills

  • High school diploma or GED required. Minimum of one (1) year experience as an EMT-Basic; (EMT-Advanced or EMT-Paramedic certification preferred).
  • Current EMT certification or license issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience as a Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Basic Firefighter (preferred).
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and make sound decisions in emergency situations.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and public interaction skills.

Salary and Classification

Hourly Rate: $22.25 – $29.03                       FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Hours of Work

24-hour shifts based on a 48/96 schedule. Hours may vary based on operational needs, emergencies, and disaster response.

Position Status
