Job Summary

There are two main functions for this position, responding to emergency calls and providing skilled maintenance & inspection of the department’s equipment. The Firefighter Technician will respond to emergency and non-emergency calls during work hours. This position is responsible for performing and providing inspections and basic maintenance on small equipment, facilities and logistical support as assigned by the Assistant Chief of Operations.

This position may be assigned to a scheduled (24-hour) shift as a primary Firefighter, FAO or RFS if Chaska Fire offers that option.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to emergency calls quickly, safely and with the proper protective equipment to provide fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials, and emergency medical assistance to the public.
  • Help maintain fire department apparatus and equipment in a constant state of readiness for all divisions of the fire department.
  • Assist in community engagement, fire prevention, and public education programs as assigned.
  • Assist with daily, monthly, and annual maintenance of department SCBAs and related equipment.
  • Responsible for Chaska Fire’s Gas Monitor program. This includes purchasing as well as daily, monthly, and annual maintenance.
  • Assist with yearly pump and hose testing as assigned.
  • Maintain and oversee the medical supplies and medical bags for the fire department and police department to ensure everything is stocked and up to date.
  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining Chaska Fire’s Community AED program. This includes purchasing equipment, monthly inspections, and routine maintenance.
  • Perform general facility maintenance around the fire station as necessary.
  • Attend extra training and/or meetings that are deemed required for this position.
  • Maintain individual firefighting skills, including physical condition. Stay abreast of developments in the firefighting field and changes in related laws and ordinances.
  • Assist the Battalion Chief of Operations with any pager and radio programming needs.
  • Carry out duties in conformance with Federal, State and City laws and ordinances.
  • Perform such other related work as assigned by the Assistant Chief of Operations or the Fire Chief.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Must be at least 18 years of age 
  • Valid, unrestricted Minnesota driver’s license 
  • Three or more years of firefighting experience
  • Minnesota State Certification of Firefighter I, Hazmat Ops, and Firefighter II by the MFSCB 
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification or the ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire. 
  • Minnesota Firefighter License, issued by MBFTE, or the ability to obtain upon hire. 
  • Must possess Minnesota State Fire Apparatus Operator (FAO) Certification or be a current Chaska FAO. Individuals hired without Minnesota State FAO certification must obtain the certification within 12 months of hire. 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Current Chaska Right Front Seat (RFS) or ability to obtain this designation within 12 months of hire 
  • Blue Card certification 
Other Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to learn the operation of fire suppression and other emergency equipment.
  • Ability to act effectively in emergencies and stressful situations.
  • Ability to understand and follow both verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme height, intense heat or cold, noise, smoke, or obscured vision during firefighting, rescue, hazardous materials, medical response, and training,
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to pass a background check with no felony convictions, as well as a medical, psychological, and stress exam.

Equipment Used

  • Computers, office machines, electronic devices including cell phones, pagers and two-way radios
  • Emergency medical equipment including defibrillator (AED)
  • Designated command vehicle with lights/siren
  • Hydraulic/electric operated rescue tools
  • All firefighting equipment including ladders, hoses, pumps
  • Firefighting Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Mental Effort
  • Ability to assess emergency situations; coordinate and direct firefighting and rescue efforts as rapidly as possible
  • Ability to drive and act under high-stress and urgent situations
Physical Requirements
  • Drive an emergency vehicle with lights/siren to emergency site
  • Climb, carry, pull, lift and move objects or people of varying weights
  • Wear gear that can weigh up to 70 lbs.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move up to 150+ lbs.
  • Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Ability to sit/stand for varying periods of time
