About the Role

The City of Bend Fire Department is now accepting applications for full-time Firefighter/Paramedics to join the Operations Division of Bend Fire & Rescue (BF&R). These are regular, full-time positions represented by the Bend Firefighters Association (BFA), Local 227. BF&R is hiring four Firefighter/Paramedics and will also establish an eligibility list for future vacancies. The eligibility list may be closed or canceled at any time.

Bend Fire & Rescue is the largest fire department in Central Oregon. The Department protects approximately 164 square miles in the fire service area and more than 1,450 in the ambulance service area. In 2025, the total calls for service were 14,484. BF&R has 106-line personnel who provide coverage from 6 fire stations. The department works on a four-platoon system, 48 hours on shift and 144 off with one debit day per FLSA cycle. 

BF&R is seeking highly motivated, community-oriented Firefighter/Paramedics who are committed to protecting life, property, and the environment. This position delivers advanced life support (ALS) emergency medical care, fire suppression, rescue operations, and all-hazard response within the City of Bend and surrounding districts. Firefighter/Paramedics serve as vital members of a cohesive team dedicated to professionalism, compassion, and service excellence.

What You'll Do

  • Provide advanced life support (ALS) care as a licensed Paramedic, including assessment, treatment, medication administration, airway management, and cardiac care.

  • Serve as lead medical provider on EMS incidents operate in dynamic and stressful environments while ensuring patient safety and high-quality medical decision-making.

  • Respond to structure fires, wildland fires, vehicle fires, and other fire incidents using modern suppression techniques and equipment.

  • Perform technical rescues, including vehicle extrication, water/ice rescue, rope rescue, and hazardous materials response.

  • Participate in public education programs, school visits, community events, and fire prevention outreach.

Application Requirements: To be considered for the in-person testing process, applicants must have complete application that includes the following items:

  • Oregon State Health Authority Oregon Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic license (attach if held a time of application)

    • Paramedic License is required by April 17, 2026.

  • Submitted FireTEAM & Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA) scores via NTN (National Testing Network) National Testing Network

  • Valid NTN or IAFF CPAT issued on or after May 22, 2025.

The National Testing Network (NTN) accepts applications and appointments from interested/eligible candidates who are not currently in NTN's database. Bend Fire & Rescue will only accept FireTEAM Video Test results and Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA) that are administered and certified by NTN. Valid test results are required for the April 17th closing date.

Testing process: The in person testing process will take place May 18-22. The testing process will consist of:

  • Panel interview

  • Paramedic EMS scenario

Important Dates:

  • Submission deadline for NeoGov application, NTN Fire Team, and PSSA – April 17 12:00pm PT

  • Onsite testing process: May 18-22

  •  Final job offers made: End of July

  •  First day of Academy: August 31
