Fire Fighter Recruit / Experienced Lateral Firefighter

The Fountain Hills Fire Department is accepting applications for Firefighter and is seeking dedicated individuals committed to protecting life, property, and the overall well-being of our community. Our mission is to provide residents, businesses, and visitors of Fountain Hills with the highest level of protection through quality emergency services, proactive prevention efforts, and a steadfast commitment to professionalism.

Firefighters with the Fountain Hills Fire Department play a vital role in fulfilling our mission by delivering high-quality emergency services while supporting a proactive approach to community safety. Responsibilities include fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue operations, hazardous situation control, and hazard mitigation.

Beyond emergency response, our firefighters actively support fire prevention initiatives and community risk reduction efforts. This includes participation in public education, life and safety awareness programs, fire code enforcement support, hazard investigation, and community service activities.

Entry-Level Firefighter (Recruit)

We welcome motivated individuals who are ready to begin a career rooted in service, responsibility, and professionalism. No prior firefighting experience is required.

As a Firefighter Recruit, you will:

  • Receive comprehensive training through a regional Fire Academy in August 2026 to meet state and department standards
  • Develop foundational skills in fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue operations, and public safety
  • Learn the importance of fire prevention, hazard investigation, and community risk reduction
  • Gain experience in public education and life and safety awareness initiatives
  • Build a long-term career with opportunities for advancement

Successful candidates must meet minimum qualifications and complete all required training and certifications.

Experienced Lateral Firefighters

Certified and experienced firefighters who share our commitment to professional excellence, proactive prevention, and community-focused service are strongly encouraged to apply.

Qualified lateral applicants may be eligible for:

  • Fast-tracked hiring and selection, based on experience and qualifications
  • Advanced placement, determined by prior service and certifications
  • Pay depending on experience 
  • Accelerated onboarding and training, as applicable
  • Immediate integration into operations within a modern, well-equipped department

Work Schedule

  • Assigned to a 48/96 work schedule (48 hours on duty followed by 96 hours off)
  • 14-day work period (overtime after 106 hours). The designated Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) work period for this position is 106 hours over the course of 14 days.
  • Average scheduled time per year:
    • 2,669 hours at straight time
    • 243 hours at overtime
    • Total of 2,912 hours annually
    • Additionally, 120 hours of holiday time
  • Schedule subject to change based on operational needs, training requirements, and staffing levels

Salary

  • Firefighter Recruit: $26.00 per hour (40-hour work week while in the Academy)
  • Firefighter (Certified): $21.25 – $30.39 per hour (2,912 annual hours) +$1.85 per hour with paramedic certification
  • Placement within the salary range is dependent upon qualifications, certifications, and experience.

Qualifications

Fire Recruit

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • At least 18 years of age at the time of application
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Valid and active Arizona and/or National Registry EMT OR Paramedic certification at time of application.
  • Current CPAT, provided by an IAFF/IAFC-licensed agency, within the last six (6) months from time of application

Firefighter (Lateral)

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Valid and active Arizona and/or National Registry EMT OR Paramedic certification at time of application.
  • Firefighter I/II
  • Current CPAT, provided by an IAFF/IAFC-licensed agency, within the last six (6) months from time of application
  • Ability to pass annual physical.
