Job Description Summary

The City of Goodyear is currently recruiting for the position of Recruit Firefighter. The Recruit Firefighter will attend a regional fire academy to learn and be tested on the general duty of Firefighter work. Recruit Firefighters will receive training in firefighting methods, emergency medical service, fire code enforcement and prevention practices, salvage operations, public relations, physical fitness and associated topics to prepare for appointment as a Firefighter. After successful completion of a regional fire academy, employees are promoted to the class of Firefighter.

During the academy, Recruit Firefighters receive instruction and hands-on experience in:
• Firefighting tactics and operational procedures
• Emergency medical services
• Fire code enforcement and fire prevention practices
• Rescue and salvage operations
• Public education and community engagement
• Physical fitness and wellness
• Additional specialized topics essential to fire service operations

Upon successful completion of the regional fire academy, recruits are promoted to the classification of Firefighter and assigned to operational shifts within the Goodyear Fire Department.


Compensation and Benefits

The city provides a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits packages.
 
• Recruit pay: $30.58 per hour (40-hour work week) during 14-week academy 
•Post Academy pay: $23.02 per hour (56-hour work week)

 Day rate is based on 3054 hours. The day rate calculation is staff hourly wage X 3054/2080


Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications at the time of application:

  • 18 years of age
  • Valid driver’s license
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current Arizona State Certified Emergency Medical Care Technician (EMCT) or Paramedic
    • If applying from out of state: Applicants must hold an active National Registered EMT or Paramedic (NREMT) certification and obtain Arizona EMCT or Paramedic certification through the reciprocity process prior to official hire date. Proof of an active NREMT certification must be uploaded with the application.
  • Current CPAT completed within the last year (March 23, 2025 -March 23, 2026)
    • Exception: Full-time firefighters currently employed by a Phoenix Automatic-Aid consortium fire department who attended a regionally accredited training academy are not required to complete a CPAT test.
  • Public Safety Answers written test (link below to schedule)
    • Completed through Public Safety Answers and must be submitted prior to the application deadline.

  • The Goodyear Fire Department uses Public Safety Answers for the written examination component.

 Examination Process

The full examination process for the Recruit Firefighter position includes:

  • Public Safety Answers written exam

  • In-person interview 

  • Recruit Firefighter orientation and hands-on assessment

  • Background investigation

  • Psychological examination

  • Medical examination



Hiring Process 

To be considered, applicants must complete all of the following steps no later than March 23, 2026, at 1700:

  1. Submit an application with the City of Goodyear.

  2. Submit an application with Public Safety Answers.

  3. Complete the Public Safety Answers written test.

  4. Applicants will be invited to participate in an in-person panel interviews based on their written exam score

  5. Upon interview evaluation successful applicants will be invited to participate in a Recruit Firefighter Assessment which consists of:

    1. Orientation on May 1, 2026, from 1700-2100

    2. Full day hands-on assessment on either May 2, 2026, or May 3, 2026 (participation is required)

  6. Candidates who advance beyond the assessment will be scheduled for a final interview with the Fire Chief.

Essential Functions

This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position.  The following functions do not identify all duties performed by the incumbent. Other duties and responsibilities will be performed as assigned.

  • Responds to emergency calls and performs emergency medical service by responding to emergency fire calls, using various equipment and gear for fire suppression and control, searching for and rescuing occupants, ventilating structure, salvaging contents, applying water and chemicals to fires, and administering medications and IVs to injured persons.
  • Responds to non-emergency calls by performing snake removal, replacing smoke detector batteries, assisting invalids, and checking hydrants.
  • Educates the public and enforces fire code by inspecting buildings and property, investigating complaints, participating in fire drills, conducting tours of station, and making school presentations.
  • Maintains the station, vehicles, and equipment and completes other duties by cleaning the house and grounds, testing station generator, cleaning supplies, preparing reports, ordering supplies, processing paperwork, updating maps, participating on teams and conducting reserve firefighter training.

12 Month Objectives

  • Successfully complete firefighter recruit training at an accredited regional fire academy
  • Obtain Firefighter I & II certification through the Arizona Center for Fire Service Excellence
  • Obtain Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations certification through the Arizona Center for Fire Service Excellence
  • Successfully pass 9-month evaluations
  • Successfully complete the Trial Period Firefighter Task Book
  • Attend Goodyear’s Employee Orientation
