This is general duty firefighting work to combat and extinguish fires; perform emergency rescue and first aid; inspect structures and provide fire prevention information; and, in a variety of tasks, to maintain readiness of equipment and personnel. The primary critical responsibility of this classification is for the protection of life and property through learned procedures and responses. The work involves considerable physical exertion and the ability to perform prolonged strenuous work under adverse conditions where there is considerable hazard to the safety of self and others. Firefighter / Apparatus Driver classed personnel also act as alternates on the life squad in responding to emergency medical calls or may be assigned to inspection duties. Although Firefighters typically follow trained team patterns of response to emergency situations, each individual must be able to react immediately and appropriately under conditions of extreme urgency. Working within a para-military organizational system, assignments are received from, and regulated by, a superior officer both when fighting fires and at the station.
