Starting Pay (Firefighter): $56,000 annually
Starting Pay (Paramedic): $70,000 annually; Certified Paramedic's will be eligible for paramedic pay after six months of employment and upon approval from the Chief.

Schedule: Full time. 48/96 shift schedule.

Hiring Process
West Valley City Fire Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Firefighter EMT. Each candidate will be required to submit to three tests for placement on the hiring roster. The placement tests consist of:

Online Written Test
The Entry-Level Firefighter Test will evaluate whether you possess the critical and job-related skills and abilities necessary for success on the job. Applicants must take the test through the National Testing Network (NTN) and upload proof of completion to their West Valley City application. The top 100 passing candidates will move forward in the hiring process. This test is pass/fail; no further consideration will be given to written test scores. We may pull more candidates in the future. Following the written test, Physical Ability Test (PAT) instructions and schedules will be emailed to eligible candidates by 5:00pm on April 9th, 2026.
Physical Ability Test (PAT)
The "Physical Ability Test" (PAT) is used by West Valley City Fire Department as an initial evaluation of an individual's physical ability to perform the essential job functions. The PAT for West Valley City Fire Department is conducted by West Valley City Fire Department Peer Fitness Training members under the supervision of the Human Resource Office. To be considered for full-time employment, you must complete the PAT on the date(s) scheduled by West Valley City Fire Department.
The West Valley City Fire Department PAT will be held on April 20th-22nd, 2026. Testing will take approximately one and a half hours. Candidates must bring a valid picture ID to the PAT. All candidates that pass the PAT will move forward in the hiring process.
Oral Interview
The Oral Interview process is used by West Valley City Fire Department during the evaluation process to determine an individual's cognitive, social, and stress management skills. The Oral Interview process will be conducted by members of the West Valley City Fire Department under the supervision of the Human Resource Office.
Hiring List
Following the placement tests, a list of eligible candidates will be established. WVC may pull more candidates throughout the year from this hiring list to move forward in the process. Human Resources will reach out to candidates with any updates as, and if, they become available. Candidates selected from the hiring list must pass a Chief's interview.

A West Valley Fire Department Hazardous Materials Technician is a position that requires a high level of technical expertise in hazardous materials. The Hazardous Materials Technician will have knowledge in chemistry, hazardous materials mitigation, planning and response. The Hazardous Materials Technician will maintain the ability to perform fire fighting and rescue activities, and participate in all functions required of a firefighter in the West Valley City Fire Department.
