Firefighter

Role and Responsibilities

  • Fire Fighter Candidate will be required to attend and successfully complete both the EMT and fire academies.
  • Through classroom instruction and practical training, recruits study firefighting and fire-prevention techniques, local building codes, and emergency medical procedures.
  • Learn how to respond and fight fires with standard equipment, including axes, chain saws, fire extinguishers, and ladders.
  • Learn how to respond and treat medical and trauma related emergencies.
  • Duties will also include training, administrative and clerical functions, as well as fire station duties.
  • Within established deadline, the fire fighter candidate will be required to become a certified EMT by DSHS and a commissioned firefighter by TCFP.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • The candidate is preferred to have a college degree, but not required.  High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have EMT Certification. 
  • The candidate must pass a written entrance exam, physical agility, background, interview, physical, drug test, and psychological.


Preferred Skills

Prefer candidate to have computer skills, interpersonal skills, and a strong belief in customer centricity.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of a variety of computer software applications, especially Microsoft Office software.       
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation. 
  • Knowledge of office administration procedures. 
  • Attention to detail in composing, typing and proofing materials, establishing priorities and meeting deadlines. 
  • Good to excellent spelling, grammar and written communication skills. 
  • Excellent telephone and oral communication skills. 
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality. 
  • Ability to operate most standard office equipment.

Additional Notes

The Fire Fighter Candidate may become eligible for appointment to a Firefighter upon meeting all of the following:

  • Favorable recommendation by the Training Battalion Chief.
  • Satisfactory completing the approved training program.
  • Possession of a valid Emergency Medical Technician certification by DSHS.
  • Possession of a valid commission of fire protection certificate by TCFP.
