Job Description:

 

L3Harris is seeking Mechanical Functional Engineering Director to lead a team of Mechanical Engineers.  The Engineering Director will lead a team of over 150 engineers and managers in support of the Advanced Effects (AE) sector product and program portfolio.  In this role, the individual will spearhead the development and execution of the mechanical engineering strategy encompassing people, processes, and tools to meet both current and future business needs.  The ideal candidate is a strategic and innovative leader with deep technical expertise and a passion for developing high-performing engineering teams to deliver mission capabilities to our customers at speed and at scale. Additionally, the individual will be accountable and partner with the Advanced Effects Division Chief Engineers to ensure that all functional engineering resources (people, process, tool) are appropriate deployed to support the execution and performance of all AE sector products and programs.  The Engineering Director will report to the Sr Director of Engineering in Advanced Effects.

 

Essential Functions:

 

  • Create vision, strategy, and execute against the plan to help build a best-in-class Mechanical Engineering team
  • Coordinate all mechanical engineering support (personnel, lab resources, tools) required to perform on all programs and product developments.  Closely track engineering demand and ensure the team is right-sized, properly skilled, and equipped.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high performing team of leaders and mechanical engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Direct engineering program technical, schedule and cost performance for projects with Mechanical Engineering scope to include proposal reviews and approval and engineering program reviews and review/oversight of key technical decisions.
  • Build a platform for creativity and engineering innovation that is closely aligned and informed by business strategy and technology/product roadmaps.
  • Hire, attract, retain and grow top talent, creating a cohesive culture that fosters innovation, execution, transparency and collaboration.
  • Ensure allocation of resources is aligned with business priorities and identify solutions for the optimal utilization of resources.
  • Serve as a hands-on engineering leader, who easily gains the respect of senior and junior engineers.
  • Technical training of the organization and advancement of the state-of-the-art technology through appropriate industry interaction and continued education of technical staff.
  • Partner and work very closely with the Chief Engineers to ensure strategy alignment, execution of projects and cross-team collaboration to jointly achieve the sector objectives.
  • Approve technical solutions for programs and proposals within the business area.
  • Review and approve cost estimates and schedules for programs and proposals with mechanical engineering scope.
  • Manage mechanical engineering content on programs and IRADs to meet technical performance requirements, project budgets and schedules.
  • Ability to obtain U.S. secret security clearance. 
  • Up to 25% business travel.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 15 years of prior engineering experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 13 years of prior related engineering experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 19 years of prior related engineering experience.

  • 5+ years management experience.

 

Preferred Additional Skills:

 

  • Ability to obtain and maintain U.S. TS/SCI Security Clearance. 
  • Proven experience developing engineering teams, processes, and performance management frameworks.
  • Strong technical background in mechanical design, analysis, and manufacturing processes.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Advanced degree in Engineering and/or Management.
  • Knowledge of digital engineering, automation, or AI-driven mechanical design tools a plus.
  • Experience and demonstrated competence in technical leadership (project engineer or other technical lead) for large complex programs.
  • Experience managing the engineering content of large DoD proposals and/or new business pursuits.
  • Experience in system level development, requirements definition, analysis, integration and risk mitigation for large communications systems.
  • Deep experience with Earned Value management (EVMS), metrics, and data driven decisions.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and technical/programmatic judgment.
  • Proven ability to translate the vision/strategy into clear priorities and direction.
  • Track record of being highly collaborative with a proven ability to quickly establish trust and credibility among peers and customers.
  • Experience navigating matrix organizations to identify key stakeholders and create efficiencies in related efforts.
  • Experience leading cross functional discipline engineering teams.
  • Experience providing compelling technological briefings to executive level stakeholders.
  • Experience managing multiple layers of management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with customers and teammates.

 

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Washington, and the Greater D.C, Denver, or NYC areas is $175,000.00 - $325,000.00. The salary range for this role in Colorado state, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New York state, Cleveland Ohio, and Vermont is $152,500.00- $283,000.00. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
