About the role

As the Business Intelligence Engineering Lead, you will step into a pivotal role driving Southern Water’s BI transformation and improvement journey.

You will act as the champion for changing how information is delivered across the organisation defining BI frameworks and standards, ensuring quality, consistency, and timely insights that enable smarter decision‑making.

This role sits within the Business Intelligence and Data function and plays a central role in improving reporting capability, data visualisation, tool modernisation, and BI platform stability.

What you will be responsible for:

  • Delivering data visualisations that enhance understanding, provide insights, and generate tangible business value, aligned to BI standards.
  • Producing high‑quality reports and dashboards that support KPI management and effective decision‑making across Southern Water.
  • Analysing business requirements, data sources, and business processes to ensure accurate use of data in KPI and metric reporting.
  • Managing and maintaining BI applications (SAP, Power BI, Qlik, Alteryx) and their roadmaps to ensure stability, optimisation, and alignment with data architecture strategies.
  • Owning testing, certification, and promotion of BI content — including small changes and new product releases.
  • Supporting the business with knowledge transfer, testing support, documentation, and service acceptance activities.
  • Collaborating with Data Engineers to design efficient BI data models across consumption, presentation, and semantic layers.
  • Working with IT to understand how system changes impact reporting outputs.
  • Supporting the migration from QlikView to Qlik Sense / Power BI.

Additional requirements specific to the role

  • Ownership of BI content testing and certification processes.
  • Responsibility for BI application stability and roadmap management.
  • Involvement in change management linked to BI tool upgrades and system changes.
  • Support for tool transition programmes (e.g., QlikView → Qlik Sense / Power BI).

What you’ll bring to the role

Essential

  • Excellent understanding of data visualisation principles and practical experience creating insight‑driven BI outputs.
  • Significant hands‑on experience with Power BI, Qlik (View & Sense), Alteryx, and other BI tools.
  • Ability to manage vendors and technology partners to ensure applications remain secure, supported, and up to date.
  • Understanding of data‑modelling techniques and ability to translate BI needs across multiple functions.
  • Strong problem‑solving mindset, passion for data, and effective communication and stakeholder‑management skills.
  • Experience planning and executing automation activities to enhance BI delivery quality and streamline processes.
  • Able to think innovatively, collaborate effectively, and support change management with resilience and influence.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of Agile / Scrum principles and practices.
