What We’re Looking For:  We are looking for a suitable candidate to join the

Infrastructure Planning and Engineer Branch. We ensure Icon Water's assets are managed using sound engineering practices. We are accountable for the engineering standards and systems that support the business with technical risk management and performance.

We connect with the organisation across the whole asset lifecycle, with our focus being on the longer-term planning and performance.

About this role: The Associate Water Engineer's role is to assist the civil and mechanical team engineers and contribute to the corporation's technical expertise, advice, and engineering leadership in order to optimise asset lifecycle and deliver services that meet customer expectations.

The Associate Water Engineer will assist in the design review of Icon Water's water and wastewater infrastructure and gifted assets, as well as produce and update standards, implement the Engineering Assurance Framework, and provide technical support as needed.

Where appropriate and consistent with Icon Water's corporate strategy, drive innovation, particularly in digital and sustainable infrastructure approaches.

Responsibilities of this role:  The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Support the Delivery Teams (Capital and Development Services) to optimise execution of tasks with technical advice, guidance and data.
  • Supporting the Technical Assurance team in resolving non-standard or other engineering queries from Developer Services and Building Services teams
  • Provide technical governance for assigned water and wastewater treatment projects, offering expert guidance to project managers, validating design solutions against agreed asset objectives, and representing the project at key technical and delivery milestones.
  • Support the development and management of water and wastewater treatment assets, including contributing to technical specifications, standards and engineering guidelines.
  • Support Technical Director to provide technical, SME and risk management advice for water and wastewater treatment plant assets
  • Lead the engineering investigation process into issues that are important to the successful and efficient operation of Icon Water's assets. This includes figuring out what action needs to be taken as a result.
  • Actively look for technical risks and opportunities that need to be highlighted for resolution.
  • Develop, publish and maintain technical standards in line with water industry best practice.
  • Provide technical leadership in root cause analysis and/or ICAM investigations into significant technical incidents.
  • Keep up to date with relevant compliance obligations and communicate any material changes to the relevant responsible party within Icon Water.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship for engineers, technical officers and trades inside and outside of Engineering Services.
  • Develop, roll out and maintain engineering systems that support good engineering practices
  • Provide advice that allows the appropriate organisational delegate to make an informed decision regarding the integrity of the relevant domain.
  • Provide advice to the Investment Review Committee regarding the appropriate technology direction  and architecture/configuration.
  • Represent Icon Water needs to external stakeholders (i.e. Utilities Technical Regulator) on technical matters of the relevant domain.
  • Produce and update standards, implement the engineering assurance framework and technical support as required.
  • Work across multiple fast‑moving projects at different asset‑lifecycle stages, providing balanced engineering recommendations that consider technical, operational and customer risks in collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Work closely with the Technical Director and senior engineers, supporting team leadership and mentoring when required, while building and maintaining strong stakeholder relationships.

Who we are looking for:  We are looking for suitable candidates who hold a Bachelor of engineering degree that is recognised under the Washington Accord or Engineers Australia, in mechanical or civil engineering with relevant experience (with a preference for mechanical background within the water industry).  You should also have the following qualifications and experience:

  • A registered Engineer in accordance with the ACT Professional Engineers Act or Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) of the Institution of Engineers Australia or the willingness and necessary experience to obtain chartership in 12 months.
  • A minimum of eight years of relevant experience in water industry, engineering design, with at least three years in a senior role - Mandatory
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in water and wastewater treatment plant design and delivery and asset renewal
  • Extensive experience and technical knowledge of water and wastewater treatment plant assets and processes.
  • Ability to mount a technical ‘argument’ using a variety of communication formats in a convincing manner appropriate to the audience, typically senior executives, peers and the Board of Directors, in an environment where a diversity of conflicting agendas may exist.
  • Ability to influence and negotiate outcomes through professional and productive engagement with senior executives and managers, peers, staff at all levels, customers and suppliers, while building and enhancing relationships.
  • A deep working knowledge of water industry standard, codes, guidelines, WSAA codes, safety-in-design requirements, HAZOP and CHAIR processes
  • Design, construction, operation and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment plant assets such as pumps, piping, valves, vessels, tanks, blowers, compressors, clarifiers, centrifuges etc.
