We’re Looking for Someone Who Is:

What You’ll Do:
  • Participate in a multi-weekend academy to learn basic Firefighter-1 skills, including auto-extrication, rope systems, structural and wildland firefighting, and medical skills
  • Attend regular trainings twice a month to build and maintain proficiency in emergency response techniques
  • Complete a 6-month probationary period, after which you'll engage in monthly ride-alongs to observe and assist with daily activities like equipment checks, station responsibilities, and emergency operations
  • Support public education, community outreach, and LP Firefighters Foundation events, such as MDA Fill-the-Boot, Toys for Tots, and Canned Food Drives
  • Assist in providing services like fire suppression, emergency medical service, hazardous materials response, wildland-urban interface, water rescue, and auto extrication as part of the team
  • Uphold the department's core values of integrity, duty, honor, courage, and professionalism in all duties
  • Contribute to the department's mission by protecting life, property, and the environment through volunteer service
  • Serve as a key supporter in mutual aid strike teams, FEMA USAR, CERT, Honor Guard, and fire prevention efforts when opportunities arise

A Few Challenges You Might Face:

  • Mastering and maintaining knowledge of firefighting tools, techniques, and protocols under time constraints and in dynamic situations

The Ideal Candidate Will Bring:
  • Residency within a 20-mile radius of Livermore or Pleasanton
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent, with EMT certification highly desirable and FF-1 Academy Certificate highly desirable
  • Valid First Responder Certificate or equivalent CPR Card
  • The ability to use good judgment in emergency situations, with enrollment in the LPC FST program desirable
  • A proactive mindset and willingness to step up, learn from mentors, and contribute to department improvement

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Fire department operations, such as rescue, Incident Command System (ICS), fire protection equipment and systems, fire behavior, hazardous materials.
  • Emergency medical procedures and techniques as prescribed in the State of California Emergency Medical Technician curriculum in accordance with California Title 22.
  • Local geographical response factors.
  • Correct English grammar, spelling, punctuation.
  • Basic mathematics, chemistry, and physics of fire behavior and hazardous materials.
  • Safety practices and procedures.

Skill to:

  • React quickly and calmly in emergencies and perform emergency medical techniques and procedures.
  • Operate, maintain, and inspect vehicles, apparatus, and equipment.
  • Clean and maintain fire station and grounds.
  • Participate in public education demonstrations and activities.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Relate effectively to those contacted in the course of work.
  • Learn local conditions, locations and regulations.

Working Conditions:

  • Work at heights, in confined spaces, at temperature extremes, around crowds, with loud noises, with limited visibility, consistently following through with duties/assignments and living harmoniously with co-workers.
  • Wear approved uniform.
  • Must be a resident of the City of Livermore or Pleasanton, or currently enrolled in Las Positas College’s Fire Science Program.


Age Requirement: 

  • Minimum: 18 years at time of appointment.
