SALARY INFORMATION:

Swim Instructor - $19.30 up to $23.03 per hour

Lifeguard - $19.30 up to $23.03 per hour

Senior Lifeguard - $20.83 up to $24.87 per hour 

Approx. 25 - 39 hours per week (summer season)

Approx. 0 - 20 hours per week (non-summer season)

SWIM INSTRUCTOR

Under general supervision, organizes, leads, and teaches, swim lessons for all age groups and ability levels; follows lesson plans; evaluates progress of swim students both verbally and in writing, and prepares written records of class participation; administers CPR and first aid when necessary; performs related work as required.


LIFEGUARD

Under general supervision, is responsible for the safety and rescue of facility patrons visiting the Aquatics Center facility; performs emergency care as necessary and responds to unsafe conditions or potential hazards; observes swimmers and assists guests; performs related work as required.


SENIOR LIFEGUARD

Under general supervision, is responsible for the safety and rescue of facility patrons visiting the Aquatics Center facility; performs emergency care as necessary and responds to unsafe conditions or potential hazards; observes swimmers and assists guests; organizes, leads, teaches swim lessons and water exercise programs for all age groups and ability levels; follows lesson plans; evaluates progress of swim students both verbally and in writing, and prepares written records of class participation; administers CPR and first aid when necessary; performs related work as required.

Typical Duties Performed

SWIM INSTRUCTOR

  • Ensures an excellent guest experience.
  • Teaches swimming skills and water exercises to all age groups.
  • Teaches water safety rules to different age groups and individuals with varying swimming abilities.
  • Works effectively with the public in explaining and enforcing pool and Aquatics Center rules and facility use in order to provide a safe aquatics environment.
  • Performs facility clean up and maintenance.
  • Assists with citywide special events and community recreation activities.
  • Adheres to City and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.


LIFEGUARD

  • Observes and supervises swimmers in the pool and water park areas, identifies and prevents unsafe conditions or potential hazards.
  • Identifies and rescues persons in distress or in danger of drowning; provides emergency care as necessary.
  • Works effectively with the public in explaining and enforcing pool and aquatics center rules and facility use in order to provide a safe aquatics environment.
  • Performs facility clean up and maintenance; inspects pool facilities and reports unsafe conditions.
  • Assists with citywide special events and community recreation activities.
  • Adheres to City and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.

SENIOR LIFEGUARD

(Examples do not include all duties which may be assigned.)
  • Ensures an excellent guest experience.
  • Teaches swimming skills and water exercises to all age groups and ability levels.
  • Maintains accurate records; prepares reports and written communications as needed.
  • Identifies and rescues persons in distress or in danger of drowning; performs emergency care as necessary.
  • Observes and supervises swimmers in the pool and water park areas; identifies and prevents unsafe conditions and potential hazards.
  • May accept payments for instructional fees, admissions and facility rentals.
  • Works effectively with the public in explaining and enforcing pool and aquatics center rules and facility use, in order to provide a safe aquatics environment.
  • Performs facility clean up and maintenance; inspects pool facilities; and reports unsafe conditions.
  • Plans, develops, conducts, supervises, and manages a wide variety of activities regarding the operation of the Aquatics Center.
  • Assists with citywide special events and community recreation activities.
  • Adheres to City and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Must possess excellent customer service skills and the ability to work as a team.

Knowledge of: Policies, procedures, and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using aquatic equipment and facilities; beginning through advanced swim strokes. Methods, materials, and equipment involved in the maintenance and operation of swimming pools.

Ability to: Pass initial test and routine follow-up skill tests regarding pool and safety procedures. Swim with proficiency and endurance. Organize and direct activities, and effectively teach aquatic skills. Read, understand, and carry out written and oral directions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, community groups, staff, and other agencies. Exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact with staff and the public. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs., and work varied shifts, including nights and weekends.


EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

SWIM INSTRUCTOR AND LIFEGUARD

Must be at least 16 years of age at the time of applying. Any combination of education and experience, which provides the required knowledge and abilities, is acceptable.


SENIOR LIFEGUARD

Must be at least 18 years of age and have graduated from high school or the equivalent. Any combination of education and experience, which provides the required knowledge and abilities, is acceptable.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:

Senior Lifeguard, Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License is required.


Swim Instructor, Lifeguard, and Senior Lifeguard, Completion of the City of La Mirada Aquatics Certification Schools as assigned upon hire.

Supplemental Information

Buccaneer Bay water park at Splash! Aquatics Center will be open beginning, May 16, 2026 through September 26, 2026. Positions require availability to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Candidates with open availability will be given preference when hiring.

Applicants selected to continue in the hiring process must complete a swim test on one of the following dates:

  • Sunday, February, 8, 2026, 10:30 am or 12:00 pm
  • Saturday, February 21, 2026, 10:30 am or 12:00 pm
  • Friday, March 20, 2026, 6:00 pm

Applicants may be considered for a position other than the position applied for.

Applicants who successfully pass the swim test may be invited to attend an Aquatics Certification School. Completion of the Aquatics Certification School is required for hiring consideration. Attendance is mandatory.

SWIM INSTRUCTOR & CPR SCHOOL DATES (must attend both certification schools):

CPR SCHOOL A: Saturday, February 28, 2026 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
CPR SCHOOL B: Sunday, March 8, 2026 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

 SWIN INSTRUCTOR SCHOOL A: Saturday, March 21, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
 SWIN INSTRUCTOR SCHOOL B: Sunday, April 12, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

LIFEGUARD and SENIOR LIFEGUARD SCHOOL DATES (must attend one certification school): 


School A includes all following dates and times: Sunday, March 22, Saturday, March 28, and Sunday, March 29 from 9:00 am to 6:00 p.m. on each day listed.

School B includes all following dates and times: Saturday, April 18, Saturday, April 25, and Sunday April 26 from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on each day listed

School C includes all of the following dates and times: Monday, April 20 through Friday, April 24, 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

ORIENTATION DATES:
Aquatics New Hire Orientation, Friday, May 1, 2026 from 3:30 pm to 9:30 pm
 Senior Lifeguard / Lifeguard Training, Saturday May 2, 2026 8:00 am to 3:30 pm
Department Inservice, Saturday, May 2, 2026 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Swim Instructor Training, Sunday, May 3, 2026 12:00 pm to 6:30 pm
All staff aquatics training, Saturday, May 9, 2026 10:00 am - 3:00 pm


Candidates will be required to pass a City administered pre-employment requirements which include live scan fingerprinting and a medical examination as part of the selection process. Candidates who do not pass any portion of the above processes will be disqualified and removed from proceeding in the selection process.
