Role: As a lifeguard and swim instructor of MNP Community and Sport Centre, you are to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all members and guests during all aquatics programming. Maintaining Lifesaving Society standards throughout your day to day, through prevention, timely response and legendary service.

Reports to: Aquatic Shift Leader, Aquatic Operations Coordinator, Aquatic Swim for Life Programs Coordinator and Aquatic Programs & Operations Manager

What You’ll Do

Safety & Supervision

  • Actively supervise patrons using scanning, roaming, and blind-spot checks.
  • Provide emergency care and stabilization until Emergency Medical Services arrive.
  • Follow and uphold all policies and procedures outlined in the Aquatic Safety and Supervision Plan.
  • Maintain the fitness level required to meet National Lifeguard and Lifesaving Society standards.
  • Ensure participants are organized and prepared to evacuate during emergencies.

Instruction & Program Delivery

  • Teach Lifesaving Society Swim for Life programs, and MNP Community & Sport Centre aquatic programs in a safe, effective, and engaging manner.
  • Develop and integrate creative, age-appropriate teaching methods, games, and activities using internal and external resources.
  • Assist with planning and delivering aquatic special events and program days.

Professional Standards & Customer Engagement

  • Present a professional appearance at all times, including proper uniform, and conduct.
  • Demonstrate a consistently professional attitude while delivering high-quality customer engagement and Legendary Service.
  • Handle or appropriately refer programs, concerns, and situations as they arise.

Aquatic Operations & Maintenance

  • A minimum weekly commitment of four (4) hours is required. This may be fulfilled through lifeguarding shifts with/or one lesson set per week. Lesson shifts are a minimum of 3 hours, depending on program needs.
  • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance duties to ensure a safe, clean, and visually appealing pool deck.
  • Assist with pool set-ups, takedowns, and special event preparations.
  • Complete setup and takedown duties for special events as required.
  • Special events include: any aquatic sport events, floatables, commercial bookings, etc.

Administration & Communication

  • Prepare and maintain accurate activity reports, stat sheets, and maintenance documentation.
  • Prepare and maintain lesson binders, test sheets, lesson plans, etc.
  • Stay up to date on all communications via internal MNPCSC email.
  • Submit quarterly availability by the designated deadlines set by the Aquatic Programs and Operations Coordinators.
  • Attend and actively participate in all scheduled staff training, quarterly in-services, and professional development opportunities.
  • Complete the Aquatic Lifeguard and Instructor Training Program within probationary period.

Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with Aquatic Program Managers, Coordinators, and Aquatic Shift Leaders to support short- and long-term program development.
  • Perform additional job-related duties as assigned to support overall facility operations.

What You’ll Need: 

  • Current Lifesaving Society Swim & Lifesaving Instructor Certification (required).
  • Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Certification (required).
  • CPR-C (recertified within the last year) and Standard/Intermediate First Aid (recertified within the last two years) (required).
  • National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Level 1 or higher (considered an asset).
  • Standard First Aid Instructor, National Lifeguard Instructor, and Swim & Lifesaving Instructor Trainer certifications (considered an asset).
  • Demonstrated leadership capacity.
  • Knowledge of Aquatic sports and programs.
  • Excellent customer engagement, communication, problem solving, judgment, skill in the application of life guarding surveillance and rescue techniques, and the ability to deal with conflict diplomatically will help ensure your success
  • Your proven track record working independently and in a team environment is an asset.
  • Experience with competitive lifeguarding/lifesaving an asset.
  • Dedicated and reliable with a strong commitment to teamwork.
  • Strong public relations and excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
  • A high sense of urgency, ability to think clearly while handling multiple priorities in emergency situations.
