Peninsula Community Center, a ministry of Peninsula Covenant Church (PCC), builds community by providing personal, healthy, and meaningful connections through aquatics, fitness, tennis, and community programming. PCC is a vibrant and forward-thinking church located in Redwood City, dedicated to serving our community and making a positive impact through our outreach programs including our Community Center. PCC employs over 150 seasonal and part-time staff to support various community efforts. Our team thrives on flexibility, openness to change, and collaboration, with a shared passion for helping others and working together.

PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVE
The Lifeguard ensures the safety of all PCC members and guests both in the water and on the pool deck.

PRINCIPAL WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
This position interacts regularly with On Deck Supervisors, the Aquatics Coordinator, the Aquatics Director, fellow Lifeguards, and other Peninsula Community Center staff. Lifeguards also engage with PCC members, guests, and families to foster a safe and welcoming aquatic environment.


WORKWEEK

  • Commit to working 7 out of the 9 weeks of summer (June 8th-August 9th).
  • Attend mandatory all-staff training on June 7th; attend all other required training and meetings, including weekly in-service training.
  • Work one summer holiday (Memorial Day or Labor Day) and two special event days (June 20th, July 16th, July 17th, or July 23rd).
  • Seasonal position running June–July; hours and shifts vary, with weekly hours ranging from 4-15.


SUMMARY OF KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Be available to work as scheduled and take full responsibility for finding a substitute if unable to work; be on time for shifts and when returning from breaks.
  • Maintain vigilance and ensure the safety of all swimmers and pool patrons at all times.
  • Monitor pool and deck areas, proactively identifying and addressing potential safety hazards.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to emergencies, following the facility’s Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with staff, members, and guests and work collaboratively with all Aquatics and Center staff to provide exceptional service to members and guests.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, organized, and safe pool and deck environment.
  • Communicate scheduling changes early, secure appropriate substitute coverage when unable to work a scheduled shift, and assist with coverage when available.
  • Other duties as they pertain to and aid in supporting the ministry's principal objectives.

PROFILE SKILLS & CORE COMPETENCIES

  • Strong situational awareness and attentiveness, with the ability to prevent and respond to incidents.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of interacting with staff, members, and guests professionally and clearly.
  • Knowledgeable in lifeguarding best practices, CPR, First Aid, and emergency response procedures.
  • Calm and decisive during emergency situations, following protocols efficiently.
  • Team-oriented, adaptable, and collaborative in a fast-paced aquatic environment.
  • Professional and approachable, fostering a welcoming and safe environment for all patrons.


EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard certification required.
  • Must be at least 15 years old with strong swimming skills.
  • Prior lifeguard experience preferred.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be in the water and sun for extended periods.
  • Must be able to perform all American Red Cross Lifeguard rescue skills, including but not limited to diving up to 12 feet, treading water for extended periods, CPR, rescue breathing, in-water spinal backboarding, and using an AED.
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds occasionally and 15-20 pounds frequently.
  • DOJ background clearance required.
  • Must adhere to and model PCC’s Safe Church policies.

Compensation: $20.00 - $23.00 per hour
