General Description

Under general supervision, this position performs general technical protective service work in the fields of fire suppression, prevention, and emergency medical services. Reports to a Company Officer.

Essential Functions

Provides emergency response, basic or advanced life support and a variety of other assigned duties associated with fire and rescue; provides immediate emergency care to ill or injured persons; assesses the patient to determine the extent of the patient’s condition; renders immediate and appropriate treatment to include but not limited to emergency invasive procedures; and transports patients to appropriate medical facilities.

Provides fire prevention, rescue, fire suppression, and a variety of other assigned duties associated with fire and rescue; assists in performing rescues from hazardous sites such as auto accidents and collapsed buildings; and operates fire apparatus and equipment. 

Performs routine clerical and administrative functions such as preparing reports and completing forms, using computers and appropriate approved software. Performs housekeeping duties at assigned station; performs inspections, maintenance and minor repairs on apparatus and equipment for both firefighting and emergency medical services. 

Performs other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required Knowledge
 
Fire Suppression – Knowledge of practices pertaining to fire suppression to include safety and infection control procedures pertaining to the use and operation of fire apparatus, equipment, tools, and protective gear. Knowledge of the proper use and basic maintenance of a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). Comprehensive knowledge of incident command procedures, emergency vehicle operations, and basic maintenance needs including fire engine, aerial and medical apparatus. 

Emergency Medical Services – Knowledge of emergency medical care including trauma and advanced cardiac life support principles and practices. 

Safety/Security – Knowledge of safety rules, regulations, procedures and practices as outlined in department directives as they relate to apparatus, equipment, tools, and protective gear. Maintains situational awareness. 

Customer Service – General knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services. This includes setting and meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.

Required Skills 

Interpersonal Relationships – Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with employees, managers, and representatives from other departments and organizations. Shares knowledge with staff for mutual and departmental benefit. 

Judgement/Decision Making - Anticipates, identifies and evaluates potentially dangerous, unusual or deviating situations and exercises appropriate judgment to establish priorities and take prompt action for problem resolution. 

Required Abilities

Communication - Ability to communicate effectively, including the preparation of reports and logs and the use of radio communications including appropriate channels and basic radio communication codes. Ability to listen and understand directions, information and ideas presented verbally and in writing. 

Time Management – Ability to plan and organize daily work routine. Establishes priorities for the completion of work in accordance with sound time management methodology.

Geography - Ability to read maps, basic plans and diagrams such as evacuation or building floor plans. 


Education, Training, and Experience

Requires a minimum of a High School or General Education Diploma (GED) or a combination of education and training. Requires the completion of an approved and recognized regional fire academy and certification as EMT-Paramedic through complete of the National Registry Testing. 

Requires a comprehensive background investigation to include a local, state and federal criminal history check and sex offender registry check. Requires satisfactory results from a medical evaluation and pre-employment substance abuse testing and is subject to random controlled substance testing and annual medical evaluations.
