  1. Position Purpose 

This position requires the employee to perform firefighting duties approved by the Board of Trustees under the direction of the Fire Captain.  The employee will perform daily support operations as assigned to maintain all equipment, facilities, and apparatus of the Department.  This position will also provide public education and training on topics of life safety, health, fire prevention, and other related topics as deemed necessary by the Department. 

 

  1. Minimum Qualifications 

  1. ​​High School Diploma or G.E.D. 

  1. ​Must meet the requirements of NFPA 1001, Fire Fighter I. 

  1. ​National registered EMT or Kentucky certified EMT and be in good standing with AMFEMS Medical Director. 

  1. ​ Effective written and oral communication skills. 

  1. ​Willing to work weekends or evenings as required. 

  1. ​Members must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license prior to operating any vehicle owned by the Anchorage Middletown Fire and EMS. The license must be a full operator’s license. Instructional or temporary learning permits do not meet this requirement.

  1. Additional Minimum Qualifications (If Eligible for Paramedic Pay) 

  1. National registered Paramedic or Kentucky Certified Paramedic 

  1. AHA certifications: 

  1. Advanced Cardiac Life Support 

  1. BLS Healthcare Provider 

 

  1. Desirable Qualifications 

  1. ​​Associate’s degree in Fire Science or related field. 

  1. ​Previous experience as a Firefighter with a department of comparable size to Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS. 

  1. ​Kentucky certified Fire Service Instructor. 

  1. ​Kentucky certified Fire Inspector 

  1. ​IFSAC Firefighter, I & II or Basic II State Certified Firefighter 

  1. ​Certified Haz-Mat Technician  

  1. ​Confined Space Technician 

  1. ​Certified Apparatus Operator with a Department comparable to Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS.​ 

  1. Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks 

  1. ​​Abide by the requirements of the Administrative Policies and the Standard Operating Procedures of Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS. 

  1. ​Respond to all calls for service when on duty and perform such duties as requested by the Officer in charge, to the best of his/her ability. 

  1. ​Attend assigned training sessions. 

  1. ​Remain at the fire scene, station, or training until dismissed by the Officer in charge. 

  1. ​Be responsible for his/her issued equipment (i.e. PPE, uniforms, radios, etc.), including routine upkeep and maintenance.  Return issued equipment to the appropriate Division upon request, termination, or inactivity with the Department. 

  1. ​Be responsible for any assigned station or apparatus duties. 

  1. ​When appropriate, ensures that records required of emergency responses, accidents, injuries, trainings, and other situations for which documentation is required are completed prior to end of each shift. 

  1. ​Treat superior officers, associates, and the public respectfully and with a professional demeanor. 

  1. ​Do not publicly criticize instructions or orders he/she have received. 

  1. ​Continue to meet the requirements as outlined in NFPA 1001, Firefighter I, and strive to meet the requirements for Firefighter II. 

  1. ​Notify his/her supervisor of any change of address or phone number within two (2) weeks of the change. 

  1. ​Notify their supervisor of any equipment malfunction, lost or missing equipment, and/or needed equipment including personal, station, or apparatus. 

  1. ​Serve as an instructor as needed and assist the Division of Workforce Development in conducting training sessions. 

  1. ​Remain familiar with the equipment on all apparatus of the Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS Department. 

  1. ​Maintain certification as an EMT or Paramedic.  Notify their supervisor and the Medical Director of any change in status of their EMT/Paramedic or their ability to function as an EMT/Paramedic in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. 

  1. ​If so certified, will maintain paramedic proficiency by completing any requirements set by the Medical Director. 

  1. ​Ride a minimum of 48 hours per quarter on an ambulance. 

  1. ​Participate in daily work assignments as assigned by the Station Captain including but not limited to: 

  1. ​Building and grounds maintenance 

  1. ​Vehicle maintenance 

  1. ​Fire prevention, public education, and fire hydrant testing 

  1. ​Training 

  1. ​Respond to call backs as requested.

  1. Special Position Requirements 

The employee may be required to perform all job functions under hazardous and/or austere conditions; while being exposed to all weather types and/or under extreme stress. 

 

  1. General Employment Provisions 

  1. All employees are required to comply with all District policies, standard operations procedures (SOPs), standard operating guidelines (SOGs), directives, and lawful orders. 

  1. All hazardous duty employees must successfully maintain an annual fit for duty and maintain the Kentucky Fire Commission required annual training.
