Job Summary
Under general direction, the person in this position responds to fire alarms and emergencies, performs fire suppression and rescue activities. Provide life support to victims of fires, rescue operation, accidents and general medical emergencies. Assist in training, evaluating shift personnel, and emergency/non-emergency activities. Maintains fire equipment, performs general housekeeping duties, and completes any necessary records and/or reports. Operate a variety of vehicles in a safe manner at all times. Regularly engages in continuing education for emergency medical technician training.

Essential Job Functions:

PATIENT CARE

Perform basic life support activities, under Paramedic’s instruction, to victims of fire, accidents, natural disasters and other emergencies. This could include:

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
  • Control of bleeding;
  • Treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, head injuries, gastrointestinal and genitourinary injuries, medical emergencies, child birth and pediatric problems, mental health problems and environmental injuries; and
  • Monitors and corrects diabetic irregularities and emergencies.
  • Bandaging
  • Communicates with hospital staff to advise them of incoming patients
  • Prepare patient for transport to a medical facility.
  • Accompany patient when appropriate. 
  • Record patient pre hospital care, incident description, treatment and disposition.
  • Prepare equipment for next call or emergency and maintains equipment on a continuing basis, to include cleaning, restocking and overall preparedness.

FIREFIGHTING

  • Assist in large scale evacuation as needed.
  • Apparatus operation, driving, pump operation; to include figuring hydraulics for friction loss, nozzle pressure, pump pressure; aerial devices and water craft.
  • Hose operation, water supply, attack lines, hose maintenance and clean up.
  • Searches emergency scene for trapped and/or injured victims, remove and care for victim.
  • Operate various types of power and hand tools to facilitate forcible entry, ventilations and for extrication.
  • Carries positions and climbs ladders to perform fire suppression.
  • Aid and assists fellow firefighters.
  • Gather information at emergency scene to facilitate complete and accurate documentation of incident.
  • Operation and care of ground ladders; positioning, raising, climbing, performing rescues and assuring safety in all operations.
  • Follow correct procedure of salvage operations to prevent unnecessary damage to property.
  • Prepare equipment for next call or emergency. Cleans truck, replaces fire hoses, clean ladders, and other portable equipment.

SUPERVISION

  • Assume supervisory duties in the absence of the shift Officer.
  • Supervise and coordinates emergency incidents in the absence of the shift Supervisor.
  • Supervise and assist in cleaning and maintenance of facility, grounds, vehicles and equipment.
  • Assist with training of all personnel.
  • Maintain safe work environment.
  • Performs pre-fire plans of public buildings, lectures on fire safety and health care, and perform related fire prevention, public education and awareness activities.
  • Completes activity reports, equipment accountability reports for state and regional and other required reports and related correspondence.
  • Acknowledges and carries out orders.

TRAINING

  • Receive State Firefighter Certification.
  • Fire Behavior, Fire Streams, Fire Control (72 hours);
  • Orientation and Safety, Personal Protection Equipment, Prevention and Public
  • Education (56 hours);
  • Building Construction, Forcible Entry, and Ventilation (32 hours);
  • Portable Extinguishers, Sprinkler and Alarm System, Fire Department
  • Communications (24 hours);
  • Ropes and Knots, Rescue and Extrication, Ladder (56 hours);
  • Water Supply, Fire Hose (32 hours);
  • Loss Control, Salvage, and Overhaul (24 hours);
  • Emergency Medical Technician – Basic Certification (140 hours);
  • Maintain State Firefighter Certification by participating in State required 480 hours of training in the fields listed above.
  • Maintains Basic Emergency Medical Technician
  • Continuing Education Units in the amount of 16 hours in a Basic Life Support.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Continuing Education Units in the amount of four hours.
  • Participates in daily training activities to improve department-required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Meets or exceeds Hazardous Materials Response Certification requirements (minimum of 40 hours study)

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Perform pre-fire plans and inspections.
  • Provide lectures and demonstrations on fire safety and health care to increase public awareness.
  • Records and reports maintenance activities with all fire rescue apparatus.
  • Inventories and restocks emergency supplies.
  • Cleans and maintains vehicles, equipment and facilities.
  • Maintain a safe working environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Verbal skills to communicate effectively with medical community, patients, general public, co-workers, supervisors and other emergency personnel.
  • Math skills to calculate fire ground hydraulics.
  • Writing skills to complete all needed records and reports, effectively correspond with others and transcribe educational material.
  • Reading skills to understand complex medical and fire service literature.
  • Driving skills to safely operate vehicles under normal and adverse conditions, including emergencies, hurricanes, holiday and traffic.
  • Be skilled in use of medical and fire equipment including all types of Fire apparatus.
  • Thorough knowledge of EMT basic life support procedures and practices, being proven in Emergency situation and training.
  • Thorough knowledge of fire operations and procedures, including Hydraulic, friction loss, PSI, water hammer, testing of hydrant pressure and HAZMAT.
  • Knowledge of local geography, streets and businesses, Fire Hydrants, F.D.C., sprinkler connection, and block construction.
  • Knowledge of city and department rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to make sound decisions in emergency situations at all levels of emergencies.
  • Work harmoniously with general public and co-workers.
  • Special skills required as Apparatus Operator, Ladder Truck Operator and Instructor I & II.

Qualifications:

  • Possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Possess a valid Alabama driver’s license.
  • Be willing to travel to attend schools.
  • Be willing to work non- standard hours to provide 24-hour coverage.
  • Experience in supervision and three years field experience as a Firefighter/EMT II.
  • Possess a State EMT Basic License which requires 172 hours of study in Basic Life Support Studies and to pass the National Registry Exam.
  • Be certified by State as Firefighter I with 312 hours of study in all fields of Fire Behavior, Suppression, and control and pass state exam.

Physical demands: 

The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas. Must meet NFPA Physical standards which include timed test of:

  • Running 1 ½ miles
  • Minimum of 50 push ups
  • Minimum of 100 sit ups
  • Pulling 150’ charged hose for 100 feet
  • Climb and descend three floors (by stairway) in full turnout and air pack.
  • See well enough to drive, read, and operate equipment.
  • Hear well enough to receive orders and information via radio or telephone
  • Speak well enough to be heard under adverse conditions, communicate by radio or telephone, and address small groups.
  • Body movement or mobility to perform rescue and fire ground activities, meet physical requirements of Firefighter/EMT II and perform day-to-day activities.

Work environment:

The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., working at heights under extreme outdoor weather conditions, subject to fire related dangers or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
